Fall Agricultural Fairs
Fun For Everyone
The long holiday Labor Day weekend signals the start of local, county and regional agricultural fairs here in New England.
Over the years we’ve taken the girls to many small and large fairs. Each one was unique in perspective and the girls always came away with some new knowledge.
The tradition continued this past weekend as our oldest daughter, charming son-in-law, the Hubster and I took the grandkids and visited the 100 year-old Haddam Neck Fair here in Connecticut.
It’s fun to think that our family daytrips made such an impression on our daughter and that she wants to share the same experiences, sights, smells and sounds with ‘Lil Moomette and Slugger.
Slugger enjoyed watching the colors of the Fife and Drum Corp go by!
‘Lil Moomette tends to be a little skittish of large animals, even though she has a dog and cat of her own. A trip to Stew Leonards and one look at the mooing cow on the wall sends her into a tailspin!
We visited the petting zoo with the goats and sheep, and saw cows, llamas as well as a camel. There also was bird of prey exhibit with wildlife rehabilitators, which featured a Red Tail Hawk and owl.
On to the midway where my daughter shot some basketballs and came away winning a Clifford The Big Red Dog.
We had lunch before we left to try to be frugal and save some money, yet couldn’t escape the wonderful smells of fried dough and kabobs. When we do eat at the fairs we like to support local booth endeavors such as the Lions Club, churches or auxiliary fire departments – they tend to have the best value and we’re able to contribute to a good cause.
Next up is the Eastern States Exposition (The Big E) which runs from September 18 – October 4, 2009 this year. All the New England States are represented at this fair.

About Moomettes
Sounds like fun was had by all. State and county fairs still have that hometown feel. You just have to know where to find it sometimes. The one you attended is my kind of fair where you can share history and enjoy games that don’t take your money away with the promise of prizes that seem to never leave the upper level of the tables!

Sooo cute. That looks like so much fun. I LOVE country fairs! I wish I could bring my family there this weekend… but it’s a bit of a stretch from Washington State.

I remember all the county fairs we went to as kids… what fun.
The food, the rides, the animals, the crafts… Then at the very end, the fantastic fireworks. Thanks for sharing the wonderful photos.

Hi Lorie – I’ve only been to a couple of fairs that had fireworks – the Wapping Fair and the Big E! Fireworks in the fall and crisp air is so neat!
