Supposedly the little boogers prefer type "O" blood- dont know how true that is or isnt. I too am a skeeter magnet.
When I get them while fishing- it is mud to the rescue. It takes down the swelling & I guess mosquitoes dont like biting through it.
Benedryyl does the trick for me afterwards- then I am out like a light :) Mud & all!

Hey Moomette,

Saw your recent re-tweet of your complaint re: Natrapel 8 hour. I'm very sorry to hear that you had an unsatisfactory experience with our product. There are various factors that can undercut the effectiveness of insect repellent -- e.g. bugs are attracted to dark clothing, perfume or heavily scented antiperspirants. Another factor is body chemistry. Everyone has a different body chemistry which can directly impact on the effectiveness of an insect repellent. You could be one of those rare, unlucky folks for whom Picaridin -- the active ingredient in Natrapel 8 hour -- doesn't work.

Picaridin is recommended by the CDC for repelling insects, including mosquitoes, ticks, black fly's, etc. Natrapel 8 hour actually contains 20% Picaridin -- the most of any insect repellent sold in the U.S. -- and has been proven, based on scientific studies, to repel mosquitoes, ticks, etc for 8+ hours. Consumer Reports Magazine recently gave Natrapel 8 hour a much prized "recommended" rating as part of its insect repellent study. There are even some EPA-approved studies which show that the formula in Natrapel 8 hour provides 12+ hours of protection against some species of mosquitoes. That's why we say confidently, based on the studies, that Natrapel 8 hour is as effective as DEET. All of the claims we make re: duration of protection have to be supported by scientific studies and approved by gov't regulatory agencies (e.g. EPA). I'm not at all dismissing your experience. I would be happy to provide you with samples of our Ben's Tick and Insect repellent, which contains 30% DEET, to test out. Ben's is alcohol free, so it won't irritate the skin like other DEET-based repellents that contain alcohol do. Re: your bug bites, I would recommend AfterBite, which contains ingredients that provide sustained relief from itching/swelling of insect bites and stings. There are AfterBite formulas available for both kids and extra-strength versions for adults.

Since you're based in New England, I'm sure you've heard of both. If not, here are links to the products -- (<a href="http://bit.ly/bhh84x" rel="nofollow">Ben's</a>) (<a href="http://bit.ly/bTITZm" rel="nofollow">AfterBite</a>)

Pls DM your address and we'll get the Ben's to you for testing. Thx Moomette. Sorry for the long-ish post. Best regards -- Simon at Tender

I'm one of those that is a skeeter magnet and get a HORRIBLE reaction to the bites... I swell up and then get allergic reations to the bites. I can only use repellents that have DEET in them and have been using them since I was a kid, with no ill effects. I used Deep Woods OFF! for camping trips and hiking when I was a kid ~ all through-out the Appalachian trail.

The only thing that ever helped my itching was straight isopropyl alcohol, but only for a short period, and then Rx strength hydrocortisone and prednisone. Good luck with your itches, sorry about the bites, I KNOW how miserable you are!

I'm sorry you got bitten so much - maybe you have mosquito-lovin' sugar blood!

Next time reach for a little off and it shouldn't be sooo bad - everything in moderation is my mom's advice!

Thanks for the great link Erin! I had my DH watch the video and it was really interesting. You're right about Deet not being so bad for the kids any longer. Now to just convince my DD26.
