Literature Revisited
I’m a firm believer in that certain things happen for a reason. I’ve written frequently here that I believe that I have some sort of Sixth Sense and premonitions and can see the significance in events.
This week I came home from the office and found a package on the dining room table. It was from my best IRL friend since kindergarten. After retiring from teaching, she now owns a most delightful used bookstore, Bearly Used Books in New Hampshire.
When I opened the package, it was a paperback of John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath” 1969 ed. Attached was a note that said “Read This First!”
“Hi, This is incredible ~ I bought a ton of books at a book sale in Holden, MA & look what I found inside one of the books…”
My friend Joy travels throughout the East coast and buys books for resale in her store.
When I opened the book, inside was written in my handwriting:
Cindi, Room # August 1970
It was a book from my 1st Semester Literature Class when I attended Bay Path Junior College in Massachusetts. I must have sold it back to the college when I was finished with it!
What perplexes me is the irony of receiving this book now ~ at this point in time.
Steinbeck’s book speaks of hard times during the Great Depression:
“…economic hardship, hopeless situations, leaving Oklahoma in search of jobs, land and dignity...”
Wikipedia
I see a message here. The current state of the economy has affected some members of my family and I’m sure that so many others of you might be experiencing hardship as well.
The Grapes of Wrath bears re-reading and interpretation for a second time, only through the eyes of a jaded 50+ year old woman, rather than as a starry-eyed girl of 18.
What hidden messages do you think I’ll discover?

Wow that’s freaky but so cool too! I guess you were meant to read the book again. Any chance you wrote a paper on it? That would be great to pull out the paper and then write a post and compare the two.

Reading the book now I would think would have a lot more impact on you and perhap you’ll have greater understanding. There’s probably a lot of relatibility to our current times. That’s cool how this surprise came at this time.
You have me inspired to want to read the book now also.
Btw – I subscribed to your blog. Thanks

That truly is amazing. I’m a firm believe that that book found you for a reason. Have you started reading it again?

I haven't started yet, but will be taking it to the cubicle & reading on my lunch "hour"!

Probably had to write a paper, but that was a “um” long time ago, and I’m sure I tossed it! *DONT_KNOW*
