That sounds like a really good idea. My older daughter, London, is a second grader reading on a seventh grade level. She never has any trouble finding a book she enjoys, but I have to pre-screen them for content. Clearly, she's a strong enough reader for Judy Blume's "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" but the content is not age appropriate. Her sister, Maddie, on the other hand, is a first grader who has thankfully just moved into chapter books. Until now, Maddie has found the books she could read on her own (consisting mostly of three letter words and short sentences) to be totally boring, relying instead on someone to read to her. Reading chapter books on her own has opened up a whole new world to her.

I will check out James Patterson's site... I had ambitions of doing the same thing on Roxy's Best Of... Books for Kids (left the link on this comment), but I think I've only covered one book so far.

As kids get older than my girls, I think particularly boys have trouble finding great reads that match their interests. We've just been reading Dan Gutman's Nightmare at the Book Fair at bedtime. The girls love it and I'll have to share it with my Roxy's Best Of... readers.

I grew up as a reluctant reader. Now I write action-adventures & mysteries, especially for tween boys, that girls and boys hate to put down. My web site is at http://www.maxbooks.9k.com and my Books for Boys blog is at http://booksandboys.blogspot.com

I also have a short story in a new book called LAY UPS and LONG SHOTS, published by Darby Creek Publishing. It's a Junior Library Guild selection. I'm also featured in an article in the 2009 edition of Children's Writer Guide.

My other books are all ranked by Accelerated Reader
