What have we done?

Here I am, the blogging Baby Boomer Grandmom from New England. NEW ENGLAND!

Land of four seasons – Spring, Summer, Fall and … Winter!

Winter – which in most people’s minds, means, snow, cold, more snow, more cold; ice, more snow and ice, slush …. and real Christmas Trees! You get the picture.

Having been married seemingly forever, we’ve always had a r.e.a.l. tree. Right – REAL, as in not artificial. Nope, not us.

There’s plenty of Christmas tree growers here in Connecticut, so the Hubster and I had been trudging through the woods (and agricultural Christmas Tree farms) here in Connecticut, in all kinds of weather (see above, and add rain) to cut down (with a saw), a real – live – natural Christmas tree.

Over the years, we’ve had some that barely fit through the door. Actually, the first year we were married and in an apartment (where no live trees were allowed), we ever so silently dragged our real.live.tree up the stairs and through the hallway and set it up in our living room. Until, oh, maybe February?

When it was dry as a bone, we then opened the living room window and shoved it out from the 2nd floor to the ground, where it landed – not a needle on it!

Although the homes decorated for Christmas with live trees look pretty, talk about having to clean up a mess every year – with the dry heat here in New England, cleaning up the pine needles that have fallen to the ground, or that the various fur balls over the years have chewed up, is certainly a challenge.

So what makes this year different than all those others?

Now that the kiddos are grown and launched, I am simplifying my life and have decided I wanted an artificial tree. Mostly because they come pre-lighted, and I don’t want the hassle of having to string the lights by myself since nobody else will help me.

We drove for about 5 hours looking everywhere – Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, Home Depot again, and finally gave up trying to find one that looked like a natural Christmas tree. Not to be one to give up, a light bulb went off and I got the idea to call my brother-in-law (he & sister-in-law with the straight out of Martha Stewart Living beautifully decorated home) and asked where they got their artificial tree.

So off to the locally-owned Vinnys we went. They had such a beautiful selection and even the Hubster is happy! Only thing missing was the real.live.tree smell. Nothing that a Home for the Holidays Yankee Candle couldn’t fix.

And of course, to go with my beautiful tree – I found the most gorgeous vintage Battenburg Lace white Christmas tree skirt on Bonanza!

So here it is, in all it’s splendor, and my very favorite Christmas ornaments adorning it for the very first time.

How and Why to Not Let Retirement Stress You Out

Retirement Should Not Be Stressful

Common wisdom suggests that most people think that stress-causing situations stem from workplace problems. They also think that besides work, thinking about family issues, health issues and finances are the cause of stress. While these situations can individually be stressors, another one that might not be on the radar screen is retirement. Believe me, retirement is right on top of the list now as a cause of experiencing stressful situations!

Many employers are dangling a golden egg to long-time employees as a means of reigning in fiscal spending. While the prospect of ending the daily commute and 9-5 work-time in the cubicle sounds good to me, I’d be foolish to think that retiring will add leisure and free time to my days. Will I actually be able to gaze out at an aqua blue ocean while being fanned by palm leaves? In my wildest dreams will I be able to enjoy a swim-up bar on a cruise ship? In reality, I think my retirement will be quite different.

Baby Boomers like myself have been workerbees since we were 16. Retiring from our positions is going to be a huge lifestyle change. Like anything, any lifestyle changes can be stressful until you’ve fully adjusted. Until you develop new routines, you’ll feel a little lost once you’ve stopped the work routine that you’ve developed and followed for years.

Yet another area expected to change when people retire will be your social support system. Over the last 20 years with my current employer, may of my coworkers have retired one by one. Although we promised each other to keep in touch, get together often and have lunch, scheduling conflicts almost never allowed us to do so. I feel the void in our daily water-cooler chats about family life, entertainment news and sometimes the politics of the moment or crisis de jour. Retiring ends those social ties and connections. What’s left is a void that will have to be filled with new relationships and social connections outside of the job.

Leaving your job opens up a new freedom to be able to do what you always wanted to do while simultaneously forcing you to make big decisions. You may have to decide whether to downsize your home,; move in with the adult children; purchase that sought-after vacation home or become a year-round live aboard boater like Jimmy Buffet. We have friends who moved to a gated community on the South Carolina coast and are absolutely delighted with their choice. These decisions are major life stressors for anyone. Financial issues at any point in one’s lifetime is always of concern, but become amplified as a retiree on a fixed income.

Health-care issues, coping with a spouse or friend’s failing health, becoming disabled, Alzheimer’s disease and nursing home care are also stressful concerns. As a Marketing Director at an assisted living facility, my daughter recently began prompting me to look into a private long-term health-care insurance policy. Since my grandmother lived to be 101, I think she’s concerned I’ll spend-down her inheritance.

Many people of my generation have never expected a perfect alignment of the planets to collide and cause a recession at the exact moment many of us will be retiring. Will we be able to live the lifestyle we always wanted to?

Before you can deal with any stress having to do with retirement issues you’ll need to identify the source of what’s causing it. Limit your exposure to current events news focusing on crime and increase time spent doing things you actually enjoy. Exercise and time spent on your favorite hobbies are great stress relievers.

Seeking professional advice from your accountant, lawyer or financial planner is the best way to educate yourself and get a handle on exactly what’s going on with your investments. Once your questions are answered you’ll find that in and of itself will be a huge relief.

Keep your options flexible and realize that not all decisions you make will be carved in stone. The changes in your day-to-day life may feel uncomfortable in the beginning but will settle once you adjust into a new routine.

Reward yourself for all your years of hard work and try to do at least one thing that has been on your bucket list!

Baby Boomer Women and Lands End Swimsuit Confidence Week

Earth Day is April 22 – B Kind 2 Earth For Your Kids & Grandkids to Enjoy

The first Earth Day was April 22, 1970. That was the year I was a Senior in high school, the Vietnam War was raging, and it was a very tumultuous period. We all wanted to be Flower Children. My DH recalls Earth Day specifically as he flew out and back that same day from Connecticut to visit Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI where he ended up going to college.

The photo pictured above is one of my favorites that I took this past summer while on a camping trip to the Connecticut (come visit us!) shoreline. I can’t imagine living anywhere that isn’t close to some type of water or anything nautical ~ specifically the ocean, but I’ll take a lake. Summer and Fall are my favorite seasons. I love the smell of the salt water, marshes, (my family disagrees with me here,) the scrub pine needles. I love the four seasons; scents of beach Rose Begosa; and sand between my toes. Nothing is more peaceful than falling asleep to the sound of lapping waves. Cape Cod, Massachusetts has got to be one of my favorite places on the planet. I prefer to think of it in the past tense ~ think “Summer of ’42” ~ when it wasn’t so crowded, and “discovered”. You can’t beat Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard for tranquility. Ask Bill. I’m looking forward to perhaps some day camping there again with my family, charming Son-in-Law, and ‘Lil Moomette, my granddaughter.

So much has changed since 1970. I’m a Boomer now, on the verge of retirement. Not only do I not look the same, but I know the earth isn’t the same as I remember, either. As a Paralegal, my profession is focused on Energy Conservation and heavily promotes Green Clean Products, Energy Efficiency, Solar, Wind Power, Fire Prevention, Environmental Protection, Recycling, Water Conservation and more. I am responsible for researching trends on a daily basis and keeping up with current events. What I’m seeing isn’t pretty.

Do something special this year in honor of the day. Save the Earth, for your children and grandchildren.

Playing catch-up here, as an update to my recent addition of a store not only at eBay but also Bonanza~ the first week that I launched my booth I saw some pretty serious traffic.

The jury is still out whether I will continue with this level of membership, as so far, I haven’t experienced any significant increase in sales. Through other Bonanzle members and blogs, I came across a site called Plumdrop, which is a site where online sellers meet. At Plumdrop, you can set up your own profile page to promote your selling venues and deals, and join forums and groups to generate sharing of ideas. There are Etsy and Bonanza and eBay Power Sellers sellers, as well as WAHM moms with their own independent mompreneur boutique stores.

All in all, I’ve networked and made some new Twitter friends, added some new blogs to my Google Reader and gained some new insight and WAHM tips.

I must apologize that I haven’t posted recently, as I’ve been under the weather with a nasty version of a sinus thing that’s going around. The Rx is finally kicking in.

I’ve also found out tonight that there might be an early retirement package in the offering in my future, so I’ll be reading up and taking notes very carefully for blogging and WAHM tips from the upcoming SITS Bloggy Boot Camp in Boston in May! ! Hope to see you there, say hello! Stay tuned!

Sleep Cycle – Seasonal Depression In Winter Why You Need More Sleep

Do you want to know why we want to sleep more when the weather turns cold?

This has less to do with being tired and more to do with our bodily rhythms and inner workings. It sounds ominous, but it’s actually quite simple. Our bodies know what’s good for it most of the time. There are automatic “cues” in our sleep cycle that it follows to perform certain functions.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Holidays surrounded by family and friends. We’re not quite through the Holiday Season yet ~ at least in my family! Although we enjoyed Christmas Eve with family, Christmas Day was celebrated leisurely and quietly with just my husband and youngest daughter.

My oldest daughter, charming son-in-law and the grandkiddos were up visiting his family in Vermont. We’ve been taking care of the Grand Dog “Muttley” while they were away, so I’ll be a little sad to see her go home. Although my 11-year old Fat House Cat will be able to reclaim his territory!

Needless to say, with all the various parties I’ve been happily attending, this Baby Boomer is a tad exhausted. If you follow me on Twitter, you know I’m usually a night-owl and up until the wee hours of the morning!

On a good day, I don’t want to rise with the chickens. My feet just don’t hit the ground running like they used to. In the winter months, it gets even trickier. Sleeping all morning can become a habit really fast.

Seasonal depression in winter isn’t all that uncommon, it’s not because we’re lazy.

Depression and the Great Seasonal Sleep Cycle

Here’s an example of why we like to sleep-in come winter:

When the sun streams through the window in the morning, it wakes us up. Even if we decide to cover our heads and go back to sleep, the initial reaction to the sun was to wake. Our circadian rhythms tell us that we wake with the light of the sun.

In the evening, as the sun goes down, we begin to prepare for a time of rest. Well, our bodies do. When darkness falls, everything shuts down for the night so the cells can recharge. We think it is our conscious self that is tired so we go to sleep. But, in fact, our internal clock says that the city called “us” is closing its borders for the night.

There is a set pattern to these things. Now, factor in the location in which we live. I live in New England, and it can get pretty dreary here, especially when snowed in. In winter, the days are shorter and the nights are longer. We see less sunlight and experience SAD. When the sky is darkening, the body prepares for rest. In the morning, the sun rises a little later and we want to also.

The body continues to sleep because it sees no light streaming through the window. Unfortunately we still have to rise at six o’clock in the morning for work. So, something has to get us up and out.

The science behind all of this involves serotonin and melatonin, two neurotransmitters in the brain. Melatonin is produced when we sleep. Sleeping too much produces abnormal levels of melatonin. The more we sleep, the more we want to sleep because of the increase in this neurotransmitter.

During the summer, we experience higher serotonin levels. Serotonin is responsible for our mood. One thing that increases serotonin levels is vitamin D. Vitamin D is produced by skin cells due to sunlight.

When sunlight is in short supply, our serotonin levels fall and we don’t have so much energy or so many good feelings. Some people use devices called dawn simulators to get moving in the morning. They go off on a timed schedule and increase the intensity of their light until it is time for you to wake. The light triggers the body to wake up even though it is still dark outside.

As you see being extra tired during the winter months is actually quite normal. We desire to sleep more in winter because we get less light and serotonin and more melatonin.

I’ve been doing quite a bit of reading up on the benefits of taking serotonin, and have added a SAD light to my Amazon Wish List for my upcoming birthday present. First though, let’s take a look at some of the things you can do to prevent your skin from sagging and looking unhealthy prematurely.

Many people don’t take care of their skin through the years and resort to cosmetic surgery to try to get rid of the signs of aging. Some of these methods work and some don’t but really, it’s better to try to prevent or slow down the problems in the first place.

Try to protect your skin from temperature extremes.

Tanning can also be a real problem down the road since it causes long term damage. Too much sun exposure can also lead to skin cancers. Wear sunscreen now to prevent problems later.

Harsh soaps and other cleansers can strip the moisture from your skin. Read the labels.
