When my daughters were tweens, we had two old-fashioned rotary dial telephones in the house.  One was in our Great Room and was a wall phone, while the second was in the Master Bedroom, and was a desk phone.

For years we got by with these relics, because they still worked.  Back in 1989 I insisted we add an answering machine because I was job-hunting for a full-time job.  Not being a techie, the Hubby reluctantly installed it.  I firmly believe in right brain, left-brain, and this brain doesn’t do hardware.  It does software.

Anyways, when the girls’ friends would come over, oftentimes they would want to use the phone to Call Home, just like ET.

On such a day, we told our daughter’s best friend that the phone was on the wall.  The unsuspecting kiddo picked it up, gave a quizzical look, and asked WTH she was supposed to do with it, and how to use it?

At that point, I made a unilateral decision (as always) that we WERE going to get a touch-tone, push button state-of-the-art, portable cordless phone, just like the Jones’.  And besides, I am paranoid and was sick of walking into the bank to do my banking and wanted to do my banking online, just like the Jones’.

I think you can see where I’m headed with this.  The Hubby is a technophobe.  Sure, he can take the dishwasher apart and figure out what’s broken about it, and then put it back together again so it will work fine.  He just doesn’t know how to load it; turn it on or empty it.

When it comes to a smart-phone, iPhone 4, Android or  Blackberry Curve for the Hubby there is:

• No pre-programmed telephone numbers
• No email
• No Speakerphone
• No Messaging
• No Internet Browsing
• Not even an ATM card

Nada.

When my IRL friend sent me this photo, I just have to share with anyone who’s a Baby Boomer, or who can appreciate the trials and tribulations of living with a technophobe!

Now I’ll just have to see what kind of mobile deals and senior citizen cell phone plan I can get for him on this baby!

The Internet has opened the entire world up to moms at the press of a button on their computer or Blackberry. Women and moms are flexing their well-toned-at-the-gym, buying muscles online. So, what, exactly, are our purchasing habits in the online world?

Moms of today are more into technology as opposed to our own moms were. But it bears mentioning that Baby Boomer moms such as myself are catching up in that department. While we are comfortable with surfing for information on the Web and listening to podcasts and watch videos, navigating social sites is still new to many of us.

According to the 21st Century Mom Report from BabyCenter, LLC, 91% of moms are using cellular phones as a way to manage our hectic lives. These same moms are almost 350% more likely to use our cell phone to access the Internet. This means managing banking accounts and also shopping.

It was just a matter of time before forays into the online world would lead to online purchases. It begins as surfing or participating on social sites and ends with shopping for deals on the things that moms need to care for their families.

I am just as apt to shop for a Victoria ’s Secret Sweaterdress as my daughter, who’ll be starting a new job as a Teaching Assistant.

According to Jupiter Media Metrix, women without children (about 63%) are more likely to buy online with or without a sale being an enticement. Only about 50% of moms would purchase the same types of items. It’s more likely that moms would buy online when there was a sale going on for items they wanted or needed. That figure is around 41 percent.

Why? The report from BabyCenter, LLC reports that 85% of women say that having a child changes their spending criteria. Whereas extra money from the paycheck could be spent on personal items such as a new business wardrobe or travel vacations for one thing – now there’s another person to consider.

Of the moms surveyed for the report, 73% said that their purchasing criteria has changed. As a woman without children, they may have shopped for quality and fashion with price coming in third overall. As a mom, items for their children require quality, safety and durability for value. More criteria is taken into account when a child is considered.

Be mindful that brands change too. Sixty-two percent of women changed the brands they used after becoming moms. Women without children are more likely to maintain brand loyalty according to Jupiter Media Metrix.   For 20% of them, the brands reflect their personal style.

Whether a mom or a woman without children, you’re using the Internet as a vehicle for making purchases. How much and what you buy is greatly influenced by whether or not you have children in your life.

This weekend was so busy! As many of you were aware, I attended my nieces wedding, which turned out to be a 3-day party! The weather was magnificent, and the Bride and Groom were beaming!

It was a great time to get together with extended family and friends. We had the opportunity to meet my Sister-In-Law’s “new sweetie.” My brother-in-law passed away several years ago, and we’re delighted to meet the new man in her life and see her so happy once again. This is a long-distance relationship, up and down the East Coast. New Beau is retired, but considers himself a “Handyman Contractor.” Besides being a nice guy and winning over the in-laws, it’s even better that he can make himself useful when he comes up to visit!

There’s always plenty of work needed around This Old House of mine. I’m sure many of my bloggy friends, and especially those who are single moms or mid life Baby Boomer retirees, can always use someone to do some chores and repairs that are beyond our expertise.

Ok. I haven’t done any musings in awhile because I’ve been too dang busy maintaining my eBay Power Seller status and putting all my ducks in order building my new website & consolidating my eBay store and affiliate shops under one roof ~ Moomette’s Magnificents Olde Towne Shoppes.

I know, after seeing all those terrific WAHM sites on various traffic exchanges that all you sweet young things have built, it’s probably a piece of cake for you. You probably took all that HTML stuff in elementary school, high school & beyond.

Well, gram here has been learning it all on her own. At 2, 3 & 4 am in the morning when DH is sleeping, and the house is finally peaceful. You see, I’m still working at my FT cubicle job. Then, of course, there’s ‘lil Moomette whom I pick up after I get out of work until DD or charming SIL come to get her.

Well, I’m taking a break right now at 2 am from all that Photobucket & listing stuff, finding a new web host for my site, and working on the new blog template (don’t you love it? Thanks Shera, from
Sweet N Simple Design…more on Shera to come. I met Shera through Mom Pack ~ she’s such a delight!

Anyway. Where was I? Oh ya. You young gals. Well, let me tell you. After having 2 DDs, and doing the middle school, high school & college thing with them ~ Moms will find out they always have to be ahead of the curve. Want to stay in touch? The cell phone that you pay for gets put on mute. Then what? Learn to text message. They’ll think it’s their friends.

Still ignoring you? Learn to instant message. When something pops up ~ they’ll think it’s their friends and guess what ~ it’s Mom~ Here’s my AIM avatar:

My girls had to look at that on AIM while they were in college everytime they “talked” to me ~ which was only when they usually ran out of funds. And my screen name…let’s just say it started with the word “Money”! Hmpf.I digress…DD #2, took Spanish all through high school. So knowing I’d be online, she once put up her “Away Message” in Spanish after telling me she was going to a friend’s house. The “Away Message” said she was “at the beach”. Guess what? I took Spanish in High School. So I played her game and text messaged her cell phone ~In Spanish ~ that I knew where she was! That floored her & her friends. Again, one step ahead of the curve. And don’t anyone call me out for reading her Away Message.

Back to you have nothing on me. So, I’ve learned to text, instant message, and now HTML, FTP, Pop Server, SSB, Ping, Stumble ~ what-ever. There’s still a lot of learning to do, but don’t worry, I’m a Boomer & one of ours invented the Internet. Gram here is ahead of the curve, and when I finish building my site, they will come.

It’s almost 2:30 am. I know I ‘talk’ via the forums with many of you at this time of night. But I’m taking out my dentures, putting them in a glass, (thanks Suzanne) & turning off the lights now. (JK on the denture part, K?)
