Step #1 Define Your Facebook Page’s Goals and Purpose

As mentioned in the introduction there are several things your Facebook fan page can accomplish. They include but are not limited to:

• Traffic generation
• List building
• Selling products/services
• Announcements and promotions
• Content and value
• Building a community/strengthening relationship

In fact, Syncapse.com surveyed 4,000 people who “Liked” the top 20 brands with Facebook pages.  They found that someone who has “Liked” a brand spends an average of $71.84 more each year on that brand’s products or services.

A little story about turning fans into paying customers…

Company ABC created a Facebook fan page. Their audience is strongly represented on Facebook so they went all out and hired someone to maintain their page for them. They created a custom Facebook page that offered a ton of valuable content, promotions, news items and interactive tools and applications. They even included a Q&A page and a page where Facebook fans could learn about products and services and purchase directly from the page.
When a fan made a purchase they also tended to post a note on their profile about the great new product they purchased from Company ABC. The company gained more fans from these mini reviews. Company ABC was able to increase their monthly sales by 10%.

This story can easily be you. And if selling products or services on your Facebook page isn’t your goal and you’d rather build your opt in list, you can do that, too.

Before you move onto the next step, spend some time brainstorming what you want to accomplish with your Facebook fan page.

Step #2 Identify and Research Your Audience

Okay, you’ve brainstormed your Facebook fan page goals and you’re anxious to get started planning and creating your page. Wait, not so fast!

Before you create your page you want to make sure your audience is represented on Facebook. You want to make sure you’re planning and creating a page that will generate the profits you desire.

Often the best way to see if your audience is well represented on Facebook is to log on and start browsing. Search for friends by interest. Look at other pages that are relevant to your industry.

You can also go through the motions of creating a Facebook ad. You’ll be asked to choose demographics for your ad. This can show you how many people your ad might reach. This is likely your potential audience for your fan page as well. (In fact, later, once your page has been created, you can create an ad to promote your fan page.)

Take a few minutes to jot down who your audience is for your fan page. Then spend some time on Facebook making sure that they’re present and that your efforts will be profitable.

Step #3 Plan Your Facebook Page

Once you know your goals for your Facebook page and you’re comfortable that you have an audience, it’s time to get into the fun stuff – planning your Facebook page.

What link  do you want on your Facebook page?

You can create a number of link. Each one will be designed to help you achieve your goals.

For example, a Welcome tab link is a common choice for any successful Facebook page. You can adjust your settings so that’s the first page anyone sees when they come to your Facebook page.

Other options include:

• Video Opt In link
• Product link
• Questionnaire/Survey link
• Information link
• Twitter link

And so on. Here is an example of my Facebook page sidebar.

As you’re planning your Facebook fan page, consider what content you can offer that will provide the most value to your prospects and visitors.

Provide content that:

• Is relevant to your industry
• Is insightful or entertaining
• Motivates people to interact, comment and take action.

Add links that offer value to your prospects and customers.

For example, if you’re a professional coach you might have a link that offers assessments and quizzes.

If you’re an information marketer, perhaps one link will be dedicated to “reviews.” Contests and sweepstakes are also a great way to motivate people to participate on your page and become part of your community.

Create an outline for your Facebook page. Include all of the links you’re going to have on your page. Note that you don’t have to create all of them before you launch. Part of creating an engaging page is adding content and that includes adding new links as your page grows and evolves.

Start with a plan for what you want to launch your page with. Make sure your page and subsequent tabs support your goals. For example, if your goal is to build your list you’ll likely want:

• Welcome page with an opt-in form
• Info/About page

Once you have your plan, it’s time to get on Facebook and start the creation process.

Step #4 Create Your Facebook Page

**It should also be noted that you can outsource this project to a professional or a service. There are a number of social media and Facebook experts that create custom fan pages to help you achieve your profit goals.

Step #5 Maintain Your Facebook Page – A Long Term Plan

Your work isn’t done once you’ve launched your page.  You will have three primary functions to make your Facebook page a profitable success.

Network and Connect

You’re going to want to let people know you have a Facebook fan page. Share links from your fan page on your profile. Invite friends, prospects and connections to become fans. Consider hosting contests and promotions to drive traffic to your Facebook page.

Promote your Facebook page on your email signature, on your homepage, and in other social networks that you’re a part of. Integrate your fan page into your existing marketing tactics and strategy.

Consistently Add Value and Content

The best way to generate and maintain interest in your page is to consistently add fresh and valuable content. Post links, create discussions, publish pictures and content. Post surveys and have fun with applications.

Don’t forget to also publish promotions and special offers. Get creative and generate excitement for your page and your business.

Study Your Results

Finally, it’s important to stay on top of your page to ensure it is meeting your goals. Facebook provides a wealth of information to help you stay informed. You can analyze:

• The number of interactions you have had with fans each day or week.

• The number of comments you had on your posts.
• The demographics of your fans
• The links, content, or applications that receive the most interest and interaction

And of course you can and should track your success. If your goal was to build your lead list, are your efforts helping you achieve your goal? If your goal is to send traffic to your website sales page, what’s your click through rate? How many of those clicks are converting?

Create a plan to:

1. Network and spread the word about your fan page
2. Consistently add value and content to your Facebook fan page (Consider hiring an administrative assistant to manage your page.)
3. Analyze the results and build on your success.

Facebook fan pages are an exceptional tool to achieve a number of business building goals. Whether you’re driving traffic to your website, building your lead list or actually selling products or services on your page, the end result is a boost in profits.

Create your goals, research your audience, plan and create your page to support your goals. Once your page has been published, create a long-term plan to maintain it by consistently adding valuable content, networking with users and fans and tracking results. Profits will naturally result from your dedicated efforts.

Facebook pages are used by blogs, businesses, organizations and other public figures to broadcast announcements to those who are interested in what they’re doing and want to connect with them.  Using applications you can enhance your Facebook Fan Page by adding video, audio, news feeds, event announcements and more. You can also enhance your Facebook  Profile Page and Fan Page by adding a custom profile button photo that you can DIY and make it yourself for free.  I’ll show you how.

Welcome Your Visitors – Create a Facebook Profile Button Photo for a Page

Besides having a Fan Page for each of my blogs, I also have a separate account on Facebook where I can converse with other WAHMs, industry and pr reps, and social media friends.

I’ve created my own custom Facebook Profile Photo Page Button that not only sets me apart from just another pretty face, but helps to promote my blog as well.

Do you like it?  I’ve incorporated my blog logo for Moomettes Magnificents, my blog URL address, my photo, and also my Twitter handle, @Moomettes.

I did it myself, for FREE  without having to pay a designer to do it!  You can too!

I used the online photo editing service called PICNIK. With Picnik, I can edit and fix my digital photos online and make adjustments. I like that it has the capability to add text and graphics to my images. I can add frames and stickers to change out my photos, especially around the holidays. There’s a free version, and also a paid version (which I use) that has more extensive editing features.

Another photo editing software that I’ve also used is
Photoshop Elements.  You could probably use Paint.Net also if you have it, or any other photo editing software, such as GIMP, that you might be familiar with.

I’ve been writing and creating a Facebook Tutorial Series on the benefits of using Facebook for blog traffic. Recently I’ve had both my Moomettes Magnificents blog Fan Page and Frugal New England Kitchen blog Fan Page Facebook Landing pages custom designed to include a spiffy Welcome Page:

Isn’t it terrific? In a brief introduction and bio, my visitors to Moomettes Magnificents will learn more about me, my family and what I write about on each blog – work at home tips, blogging techniques, reviews, giveaways, photography , travel and family life.

On Frugal New England Kitchen my visitors will learn that I offer cooking tips and recipes, reviews of family-friendly household products, and also that I talk about my family, grandparenting and grandchildren.

Each Fan Page Welcome landing page also includes hyperlinks to my blog categories – WAHM Tips, Reviews, Giveaways, Recipes, Health, Entertaining, Grandparenting, Shopping, Travel, Photography (and more!) as well as hyperlinks to my social media icons for Twitter, StumbleUpon, LinkedIN and RSS feeds – making it easy to subscribe to my social networks and my blogs.

The cute little arrow points towards the “Like” button, where my fans can like the page, and have all my recent posts show up in their Facebook stream.

DIY Custom Facebook Fan Page

If you’re on a frugal budget, it’s very easy to DIY and set up a simple Facebook Fan Page for your blog or business.

However, if you would like a unique custom Facebook Fan Page Landing Page design such as I have on both of my blogs, I recommend my designer,  Stefanie from Design Press Unlimited.

Once you upgrade, you can’t revert back to the old version. When someone else upgrades their page, they see your page as if you had upgraded so you might as well go ahead and bite the bullet.

Facebook Tutorial Series

So far in the Facebook Tutorial Series I’ve covered how to create a Facebook Account for your blog or business, and most recently How to Create A Facebook Fan Welcome Page. If you’re wondering how to make a blog, one of the ways for blog promotion of your posts is to become active in social networking. Facebook is going to be playing a huge part on the social network scene this year for traffic generation.

Supplies Needed:

• Facebook account with a business page

Step 1: Navigate to your business page

When you login to Facebook, the option to “Manage Pages” no longer shows up under Account.

Type the name of your page in the “Search” box at the top then click on your page.

You will see options to Take a Tour, Upgrade This Page, or Upgrade Multiple Page

Step 2: Take a tour

Once you click on “Take a Tour”, Facebook will walk you through a tour which includes the following screenshots.

Click on “Continue”.

Click on “Continue”.

Click on “Continue”.

Click on “Finish Tour”.

Step 3: Upgrade Page

At this point, you will see the graphic again that asks you if you want to take a tour or upgrade.

Click on “Upgrade This Page” and you will see the following:

Read the disclaimer and then click on “Upgrade My Page”.

Congratulations, you are now using the new page layout.

Step 4: Upgrade Other Pages

If you have other pages to upgrade, click on “More Upgrade Options” and you can upgrade your other pages.

Here’s how you can easily create a Facebook Fan Page for your blog or online business venture:

Step 1: Page Setup

a) Click “Create a Page” in the lower right corner of the home page or click here to get started. CREATE A PAGE
b) Select the type of page you want to create; Official Page or Community page. For this demonstration, we’re creating an Official Page for a business.
c) Choose what the page is for (local business, product/organization or public figure). You can narrow the focus using the drop-down that appears after you make the first selection.
d) Name your page using keywords related to your business.
e) Read and agree to the terms. If you don’t agree, obviously, you cannot create a page.
f) Click Create Page when you’re finished.

Step 2: Navigate to Custom Settings Page
Sign in to your Facebook account & you should see a link under your profile picture for Ads & Pages. Click the link to customize your new page.

Step 3: Page Settings

This is where you can set any restrictions for location, age, whether you want to publish your page or leave it unpublished until you have finished it. You can edit your Wall settings, add applications, etc.

I’m not going to go through these, but I do encourage you to take some time to see what is available. Remember, the goal is to have your page be a positive representation of your blog or business so you can connect with readers, clients, customers and perhaps even some JV partners.

Click “Edit” below each section, to edit those settings. Be sure to click Save Changes for each section before moving on.

Once you’ve finished with the settings, it’s time to move on to customizing your page.

To get there, simply click the question mark at the top of the settings page. See image above.

Step 4: Customize your page

Customizing your page is just like customizing your profile page. You’ll want to upload an image that represents your blog or company, add a business summary as a way to introduce your blog or business to readers, members and prospective customers or clients and so forth.

Select “Edit Page” to add specifics such as websites, contacts, addresses and phone numbers.

Step 5: Invite friends view your page

To invite (called “suggest”) people to view your page; click the “Suggest To Friends” link under your profile picture.

Select from your friends list those you would like to invite to your page. Add a personal message if you’d like.

Click Send Invitation.

If you are comfortable doing so, ask your friends to recommend your page to their friends. If you’re not comfortable doing this, that’s OK. Your following will naturally grow as people see that their friends have joined your page. They will visit out of curiosity and many will join.

Additional Notes:

Where pages show up and how you can find them:

Pages will show up in the search results on Facebook & they are in the main Facebook Page Directory. They also show up on the “Info” tab of any FB member who connects with the page.

Pages can also be found by clicking “Advertising” at the bottom of any FB page then clicking the “Facebook Page” link on the page that populates.

To send your followers an update:

You can update all of your followers or just a select group of followers about new page content, upcoming events, specials and more. These settings are controlled under the “Customize” option in the drop down next to the “Share” button in the publish box.

All updates will appear in the “Updates” tab of a user’s Inbox. Updates published for a select group will only be visible to those users. They will not show up in the news feeds, on your page or anywhere else on Facebook.

To post an update, click the “Share” button on the left side of your page.

You first have to add the “Events” tab to your page by clicking the + sign at the top of the page publisher and selecting the Events option.
From there, you simply add a new event on the events tab.

Note: A “Blog Giveaway” is NOT an event.  I receive “Event” notifications of this type from my friends all the time.  I delete them, and block them.  Be selective in what you choose to send to your friends.

To advertise your page:

From the settings page, click Promote your page and follow the instructions given.

Traffic Generation

Awhile back as part of my blogging tips and techniques series, I wrote a post on the benefits of adding Comment Luv to your blog.  Not only does it benefit you as a blogger for traffic generation when you leave comments on your friends’ blogs, Comment Luv will help to build relationships with new readers to discover bloggers who write about interests similar to their own interest. Or, perhaps, to discover new topics that they’d like to pursue further!

But there’s another benefit when you sign up for Comment Luv!  You now have the ability to make sure your favorite posts don’t fall off the timeline or radar screen.  You can purchase “credits” to ascertain that your favorite posts will always be available to leave as a link.

Comment Luv Default Links

You can purchase a default link to add to the list of returned posts that are sent back when you comment on a CommentLuv enabled site. It works out to one link = $4 USD. They are useful if you want to keep a particular post or page from your site available all the time when you comment.

You can use this page to add extra links using your own anchor text to the returned list of posts to choose from when you comment on CommentLuv enabled blogs. Ideal for keeping a favourite post or product page available on your last blog posts list.

You can only choose links that point to your existing registered URL’s (you can add more URLs at the additional URLs page)

Online Marketing Strategies for Home Based Businesses

If you own a home based business, more than likely you are looking for creative ways to market your business. Thankfully with the internet, there is a whole online world just waiting for you! By creating an online marketing strategy you can essentially market your business for free and drive traffic to your site. And the great part is that most of these routes are few and don’t require a lot of time or effort.

Here are just a few simple ways to market yourself and your business online!

Blogs: A great way to get started is simply to start a Blog. A blog is completely free and is a glorified online journal. Blogger and WordPress are two of the more popular hosts. Look around and see what you like and then just get started. Keep in mind the goal of your blog. Is it to promote yourself, your business or simply to talk about your daily life? You can start out slowly by just posting a couple times a week, however, if you really want to utilize your blog as a resource for traffic, make it a goal to post something worth reading on a daily basis.

Forums: Forums have become an increasingly popular way to network with other people. There are thousands to choose from, so just start looking. Whether you go to Yahoo and type in groups or Google “forums”, you will be amazed at what you find. Try to find groups that will allow you to promote your business as well as gain insight and knowledge from others. It might take a while to find a good fit, but don’t give up. A good forum can be an excellent resource for you when you’re first getting started as well as an excellent tool once you’re established!

Articles: The purpose of articles is to drive more traffic to your site or blog. To do this, you simply write an article on any subject, include your bio with links and then submit them to various article submissions sites. Once accepted, your article will be on these sites for anyone to read or use for their site, blog, eZine or other publications. Whether your article is viewed by curious readers or is published on other sites, the traffic you generate can be very rewarding.

Since articles are a free resource, be sure to write articles often. Make it a goal to write at least one a week, if not more. Post them on several different article submission sites and then site back and watch your hits and sales go up!

Blogs, forum, and articles are just a few simple ways to start generating traffic and creating a presence online. All three are simple and free ways that you can begin to target a cold market on a daily basis; reaching potential customers from around the country and world! If you begin to focus daily on these three sources for marketing, you will quickly start to see your traffic increase. Be consistent and offer helpful information and you will surely see your sales increase!

There are numerous tools available on the Internet to assist in online business blogging. A valuable tool that you should use is the Alexa Toolbar. Even better, this tool is free.

Internet Tools – Blogging Strategies

I’ve been doing some blog tweaking lately.  Recently I’ve installed the Alexa Internet Toolbar.  Apparently it’s working out well as my Alexa rating has been steadily decreasing.  Also, I’m toying with the idea of switching to the Thesis theme, even though I’m not too good at coding.

If you have a blog, you might want to consider adding the Alexa toolbar to improve your stats. Theoretically, the Alexa toolbar isn’t spyware as it doesn’t retrieve any private or personal information.

Alexa blog is owned by Amazon, and ranks sites from 1 to 5,000,000 and sometimes higher. Ranking  #1 has the most traffic while anything below 250,000 and you should be getting some decent traffic levels on your statistics report. As of February, 2010 my current Alexa rating was 74,800.  This information can be used to determine how well your advertising campaigns are going and how your traffic levels are growing over a period of time. Since I write product reviews and have a PR Media Kit, I monitor these statistics and update my Media Kit periodically.

This information can also be used to determine how your fellow bloggers are doing and keep you one step ahead of them. The tool provides you with essential information regarding any site you’re looking at, including your own. If a company approaches you claiming they have lots of traffic, you can just pull up their site and review the Alexa statistics. This allows you to verify who’s receiving a significant amount of traffic and who’s feeding you a line.

So now you want to know how do you use this tool? First, you download the Alexa Toolbar as follows:

1. Go to Alexa.com
2. Click “Download Alexa Toolbar” at the top of the page.
3. Click “Install” on the next page.
Reload the page you are viewing and the toolbar will appear across the top of your browser.

If any of your readers have the Alexa toolbar installed, any time they visit you, it will help your rankings.  In turn, when you visit their sites, you’ll be building back links while helping your fellow blog buddies out.

Why not try an experiment for a month – download the toolbar and monitor one of your sites.  Once you see the data you receive and the way it can be interpreted and used, you won’t know how you survived without it!

Get The Real Time Advantage

Whether you blog for personal enjoyment, or have branded, monetized and established your blog as a work-at-home venture, every business needs to know how it’s doing. One way to monitor your blog’s “health” is by using comprehensive analytics.

Just as major online retailers use exit surveys, customer feedback forms, suggestion boxes and other devices, without feedback from the customer (in this case your readers) businesses can quickly fall off the radar screen without the owner (you) ever seeing it coming – or being able to stop the slide!

To avoid this happening, I’ve installed Clicky Real Time Web Analytics.

As a WAHM blogger, there are certain things that you should be monitoring on your website. Most of these can be classified as traffic related or server performance related.

Here’s a few to keep in mind:

Traffic Totals You want to know how much traffic your generating. If you’re like me, you’re may be wondering, if I’m writing, is anybody reading? If the line on the graph is heading down, you know you have to find out why.

Referrers It isn’t enough just to know how many visitors you’re getting. You also need to know where they’re coming from. My stats show me that my participation in social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Networked Blogs and Ning sites are sending me a tremendous amount of traffic.

Searches Clicky allows me to see what terms and keywords readers arriving at my site have searched for.  This is Valuable Information to me, and in turn, since I do a bit of internet marketing,  allows me to properly optimize that particular page and get even more traffic.

Pages Viewed Per Visit If people visit only one page per visit, you know you have some work to convince them to visit more pages, (especially those that make you money.)

Pages VisitedSo you threw up on your site something cool as an add-on. How were you to know that other webmasters would link to it and send a whole bunch of traffic your way? Well, now you know, so add some copy to the page to pull visitors into the rest of your site.

Forms Are they all functioning? A good website monitoring service can keep tabs on them for you. The last thing you want is to have lost hundreds or thousands of subscribers because a sign-up form or a Contact form has stopped functioning.

Time of Day Traffic Clicky shows me the time of day that the majority of traffic arrives on my site.  I can then optimize the time I schedule my tweets to take advantage of when my targeted readers are most likely to click through to my site.

Download Speed Clear your cache and test your pages. Perhaps those images are a bit large. Take the time to compress them.  In a previous post I recommended some wordpress plugins that can help you accomplish this.  Remember that some people are on a much slower connection than you are.

Server Speed Are there problems with server speed? There might not be where you are, but maybe on the other side of the world. Global website monitoring can alert you to a transatlantic connection problem, so you can take it up with your web hosting service.

Server Accessibility All the web hosts promise 99% accessibility. But is that for real? Who monitors them? I use and recommend
Mom Webs.

Clicky is customizable, and there’s a free version -  however the paid version allows me to see who’s actually on my site in real time.  There’s also a WordPress plug-in available where you can monitor your stats right through your dashboard. Another feature I like is the ability to shorten links I use on Twitter. I have the bookmarklet placed right on my toolbar.
