Both my husband and I attended the Hartford show at the XL Center on Saturday. My charming son-in-law’s parents were visiting from Vermont for his dad’s birthday, so we met them there along with the grandchildren and made it a family event. We all enjoyed the thrill of watching these beasts careen around specially built tracks, twist, turn, flip over and gyrate at the command of skilled drivers!  Slugger, however will have to wait until he’s 18 before he can become an official Monster Truck driver.  For now, he’s content to be entertained while watching the Monster Jam videos on my iPhone and sliding all over the floor wearing out the knees of his pants while he pretends he’s a Monster Truck driver while playing with his favorite Monster Truck, Grave Digger.

What is a Monster Truck?

Approximately 12 feet tall and about 12 feet wide, Monster Trucks are custom-designed machines that sit atop 66-inch-tall tires and weigh a minimum of 10,000 pounds. Built for short, high-powered bursts of speed, Monster Trucks generate 1,500 to 2,000 horsepower and are capable of speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. Monster Trucks can fly up to 125 to 130 feet (a distance greater than 14 cars side by side) and up to 35 feet in the air!

On the day before the show, the Monster Trucks were on display at several area Advance Auto Parts stores in the Hartford area. My husband and youngest daughter checked out Crushstation, from Maine. They had a chance to talk to the driver and ask questions. They found out that the body is made from fiberglass by a boat builder, and costs approximately $65,000 just for the body!

Before the show started, we all went down to the Pits to check out the Monster Trucks up close, check out the dirt track, and got to talk to the drivers. The lines were long and all the kids and grandchildren were patiently waiting to get autographs and a photo-opp! The Pits were open for 1-1/2 hours before showtime.

The audience was entertained with a pre-show exhibit of quad race wars before the actual start of the show. It was fun to watch and the kids were pumped up for the actual show to begin! The show itself lasted approximately 2-1/2 hours.

We all brought ear plugs because it’s quite noisy when the trucks start up and rev their engines. As this is truly an entertaining sport family event, there were many, many young children there. Earplugs and ear and hearing protection devices were available for purchase in the lobby, so we bought the grandchildren, ages 3 and 5 each a set. The kids enjoyed wearing them because they looked like they were wearing Monster Truck tires on their ears!

The candle scents are delightful, and each one becomes a favorite!  Years ago there was also an antique car museum that the Hubby would enjoy visiting, but sadly, it’s no longer there!

We took the grandkids on a daytrip and enjoyed the Christmas Village, dip-your-own DIY candles, visit with Santa, the food court, Pandora jewelry display, New England furniture decor,  specialty foods and so much more!

My granddaughter ‘Lil Moomette celebrates her birthday in October and will be turning five.  There’s so many opportunities for a birthday party theme!  Several of the local farm stands offer hayrides, and birthday celebrations can be set up in the picnic areas.  She’ll be inviting her Kindergarten friends along with her pre-school brother, Slugger and his buddies!

How to Make a Halloween Wreath 

This is a fun and easy Halloween craft project for kids that you may want to break up across a couple of days, so be sure to start a few days before the big night. Mom, Dad, Grandmom and Grandpa can join in the fun as well and make a Halloween wreath of your own too!

Material List

•  Paper Plate (One per child/adult)
• Scissors
• Leaves
• Glue Sticks
• Orange Construction Papers
• White Construction Paper
• Black Construction Paper
• Washable Black Marker
• Black Yarn (optional)

Adult Preparation: (To Be Done Prior to Actual Wreath Making)

Cut the center from each paper plate prior to giving one to each child. These will be the base for the homemade wreaths.

Day 1: Grab the kids and head outdoors.

Gather as many fallen leaves of different shapes and colors as you can find. Once you’ve collected enough leaves to cover each paper plate, head back inside and glue them to the paper plates. You can glue the leaves to cover the entire plate, randomly around the plate or even as a border around only the edge, whichever you prefer. Once you’ve glued the leaves to the paper plate, leave the plates to dry for 24 hours or at least overnight.

Day 2: Creativity

Depending on how much time you have to complete this project you can have the children do the next step after the leaves have been glued on, while you’re waiting for them to dry or you can make another day of it.

Let the kids draw Halloween images on the construction paper that you can pick up at your local craft store.

Here are some ideas for each color of paper:

• Orange – Pumpkins (Use the black marker to draw the face on their pumpkins)
•  White – Ghosts, Mummies, Bones
•  Black – Cats, Witch Hats (You can use the yarn to put a tail on the cat and hair on the witches head if you’d like to put that under the hat)

Once the kids have picked out and drawn which decorations they’ll be using, carefully cut them out and paste them to the wreath.

Tip: Pre-placement (before gluing) will give the child an idea of what the wreath will look like once it is all glued together. When the kiddos are happy with the way the decorations are placed, it’s time to glue them to the leaves.

Again, allow the decorations to dry completely.

Day 3: Decorating Time

Congratulations! You’ve made your very own homemade simple and easy Halloween wreath. Enjoy your child’s creation by hanging it on the front door,  or his or her bedroom door for all your friends and family to see and admire.

The Meigs Point Nature Center at Hammonassett State Park in Madison, Connecticut is a wonderful way to spend the day if you’re traveling and looking for affordable fun things to do in Connecticut with the family.  The Nature Center and Park Services offers programs and activities for park visitors, kids and adults alike  on a limited year round basis.

Hammonasset State Park

Each summer my family enjoys several camping trips  to the campgrounds at Hammonasset.  Hammonasset Beach State Park has 3 miles of publicly owned beaches in Connecticut, making it the State’s most popular state park.

It’s an understatement to say that the beach is one of my favorite places, as I’ve been visiting since I was a toddler.

The stone breakwater at the Meigs Point end of the park was built in 1955, and the stones were brought in by truck from quarries in northern New England.  My charming son-in-law is from Vermont, and I’ve visited the Rock of Ages Quarry in Barre, Vermont.

On our most recent camping trip, my family visited the Meigs Point Nature Center and walked the Cedar Island Trail. The grandchildren are now old enough to enjoy exploring the  walking and hiking trails along the nature preserve.

Cedar Island Trail

A walk along the Cedar Island Trail through the woods leads to a boardwalk that ends in the salt marsh. We were treated to a magnificent display of a driftwood sculpture!

At the beginning of the trail, informational boards give a bit of background on the geology of the area.

The Center hours are 10am to 5pm Tuesday – Saturday, from Spring through October.

There are plenty of hands-on activities at the nature center and preserve for kids, Mom and Dad, Grandmother and Grandfather to enjoy, whether on a sunny day or the occasional rainy day.

• Canoe and Kayak adventure trips
• Campground movies in the amphitheater
• Nature crafts for the whole family in the Nature Center
• Live Birds of Prey demonstrations and talks
• Outdoor Explorer activities to earn badges
• BINGO in park Mohegan Center
• Hammonassett Safari to look for animals in the park

On Safari we saw chipmunks, skunk and at one time beautiful Monk Parakeets that were nesting in the trees with nests that were the size of a Volkswagon Bug!

Common wisdom suggests that most people think that stress-causing situations stem from workplace problems. They also think that besides work, thinking about family issues, health issues and finances are the cause of stress. While these situations can individually be stressors, another one that might not be on the radar screen is retirement. Believe me, retirement is right on top of the list now as a cause of experiencing stressful situations!

Many employers are dangling a golden egg to long-time employees as a means of reigning in fiscal spending. While the prospect of ending the daily commute and 9-5 work-time in the cubicle sounds good to me, I’d be foolish to think that retiring will add leisure and free time to my days. Will I actually be able to gaze out at an aqua blue ocean while being fanned by palm leaves? In my wildest dreams will I be able to enjoy a swim-up bar on a cruise ship? In reality, I think my retirement will be quite different.

Baby Boomers like myself have been workerbees since we were 16. Retiring from our positions is going to be a huge lifestyle change. Like anything, any lifestyle changes can be stressful until you’ve fully adjusted. Until you develop new routines, you’ll feel a little lost once you’ve stopped the work routine that you’ve developed and followed for years.

Yet another area expected to change when people retire will be your social support system. Over the last 20 years with my current employer, may of my coworkers have retired one by one. Although we promised each other to keep in touch, get together often and have lunch, scheduling conflicts almost never allowed us to do so. I feel the void in our daily water-cooler chats about family life, entertainment news and sometimes the politics of the moment or crisis de jour. Retiring ends those social ties and connections. What’s left is a void that will have to be filled with new relationships and social connections outside of the job.

Leaving your job opens up a new freedom to be able to do what you always wanted to do while simultaneously forcing you to make big decisions. You may have to decide whether to downsize your home,; move in with the adult children; purchase that sought-after vacation home or become a year-round live aboard boater like Jimmy Buffet. We have friends who moved to a gated community on the South Carolina coast and are absolutely delighted with their choice. These decisions are major life stressors for anyone. Financial issues at any point in one’s lifetime is always of concern, but become amplified as a retiree on a fixed income.

Health-care issues, coping with a spouse or friend’s failing health, becoming disabled, Alzheimer’s disease and nursing home care are also stressful concerns. As a Marketing Director at an assisted living facility, my daughter recently began prompting me to look into a private long-term health-care insurance policy. Since my grandmother lived to be 101, I think she’s concerned I’ll spend-down her inheritance.

Many people of my generation have never expected a perfect alignment of the planets to collide and cause a recession at the exact moment many of us will be retiring. Will we be able to live the lifestyle we always wanted to?

Before you can deal with any stress having to do with retirement issues you’ll need to identify the source of what’s causing it. Limit your exposure to current events news focusing on crime and increase time spent doing things you actually enjoy. Exercise and time spent on your favorite hobbies are great stress relievers.

Seeking professional advice from your accountant, lawyer or financial planner is the best way to educate yourself and get a handle on exactly what’s going on with your investments. Once your questions are answered you’ll find that in and of itself will be a huge relief.

Keep your options flexible and realize that not all decisions you make will be carved in stone. The changes in your day-to-day life may feel uncomfortable in the beginning but will settle once you adjust into a new routine.

Reward yourself for all your years of hard work and try to do at least one thing that has been on your bucket list!

My daughter and her husband also are in the process of buying a new house and wanted to take his parents to see it and show them the new town they’ll be living in.  The Hubster and I thought we’d make it easier for them to go on the grand tour without the grandkids so they wouldn’t have to take separate cars.

Grandpa and I were in charge of entertaining the little darlings for several hours, and thought that The Lutz Children’s Museum in Manchester, Connecticut would be an exciting educational daytrip to take the grandkids to see.

The Lutz Children’s Museum

The Lutz Children’s Museum has been around ever since my own girls were young, and surprisingly, we’d never been to it before!

The Lutz Children’s Museum was founded by a teacher, Hazel Lutz, to provide educational resources to families and schools.  We remain committed to her vision of providing hands-on learning opportunities that prepare students for academic success.

The museum is a non-profit organization, depending on patron support and staffed by volunteers.  I met with Joanna Lea Snyder, a Volunteer Coordinator who explained the layout of the museum and answered all of our question cheerfully!

When we entered the main Lobby, the largest bear that any of us had ever seen greeted us!  This one was a Kodiak Brown Bear, the world’s largest bear, from Kodiak, Alaska and puts the black bears here in Connecticut to shame!

There are three galleries which house the exhibits as well as a Shadow Room and Museum Store.

The grandkids were able to explore their newest exhibit of a 1940’s Main Street Manchester; 19th Century Manchester Farm Life and visited some of the wild and domestic animals that are housed in their Animal Room.

The Lutz Children’s Museum is noted as being the home of “Chuckles” the groundhog.  Chuckles is actually now “Molly” and has quite a reputation in the State.  Many people rely on Punxsutawney Phil, but we prefer to hear what Chuckles has to say on February 2nd, Groundhog Day about the status of winter or spring in New England.

While my granddaughter age 4 and grandson,  age 2 did get to see all of the museum, we didn’t get to spend as much time there as we would have liked.  We had another commitment that evening and had to meet back up again with my daughter and her in-laws. Both my husband and I enjoy visiting museums and nature centers, and we could have spent several hours there watching the grandkids enjoy the pint-size exhibits!

There was a party event going on at the time, and the grandchildren enjoyed interacting with all the other kids.  We actually couldn’t tear my grandson Slugger away from the trains once he figured out the buttons to make the trains run!

The first Earth Day was April 22, 1970. That was the year I was a Senior in high school, the Vietnam War was raging, and it was a very tumultuous period. We all wanted to be Flower Children. My DH recalls Earth Day specifically as he flew out and back that same day from Connecticut to visit Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI where he ended up going to college.

The photo pictured above is one of my favorites that I took this past summer while on a camping trip to the Connecticut (come visit us!) shoreline. I can’t imagine living anywhere that isn’t close to some type of water or anything nautical ~ specifically the ocean, but I’ll take a lake. Summer and Fall are my favorite seasons. I love the smell of the salt water, marshes, (my family disagrees with me here,) the scrub pine needles. I love the four seasons; scents of beach Rose Begosa; and sand between my toes. Nothing is more peaceful than falling asleep to the sound of lapping waves. Cape Cod, Massachusetts has got to be one of my favorite places on the planet. I prefer to think of it in the past tense ~ think “Summer of ’42” ~ when it wasn’t so crowded, and “discovered”. You can’t beat Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard for tranquility. Ask Bill. I’m looking forward to perhaps some day camping there again with my family, charming Son-in-Law, and ‘Lil Moomette, my granddaughter.

So much has changed since 1970. I’m a Boomer now, on the verge of retirement. Not only do I not look the same, but I know the earth isn’t the same as I remember, either. As a Paralegal, my profession is focused on Energy Conservation and heavily promotes Green Clean Products, Energy Efficiency, Solar, Wind Power, Fire Prevention, Environmental Protection, Recycling, Water Conservation and more. I am responsible for researching trends on a daily basis and keeping up with current events. What I’m seeing isn’t pretty.

Do something special this year in honor of the day. Save the Earth, for your children and grandchildren.
