The candle scents are delightful, and each one becomes a favorite!  Years ago there was also an antique car museum that the Hubby would enjoy visiting, but sadly, it’s no longer there!

We took the grandkids on a daytrip and enjoyed the Christmas Village, dip-your-own DIY candles, visit with Santa, the food court, Pandora jewelry display, New England furniture decor,  specialty foods and so much more!

When my girls were little, they just couldn’t get enough of Curious George!  We had books, games and the stuffed animal version of Curious George himself! I’m certain that now the grandchildren will enjoy this family entertainment holiday special! We might even make my favorite easy Monkey Bread recipe!

Curious George
Curious George follows everyone’s favorite spunky monkey as he sets off on a series of (mis)adventures.  In the film, after the Man with the Yellow Hat accidentally brings back George from a business trip to Africa, the unlikely twosome embarks on a fun-filled journey through the big city, and ultimately finds their way to a lasting friendship.  Featuring gorgeous and old-fashioned two-dimensional animation that echoes the simple colors and shapes of the books by Margret and H. A. Rey, Curious George includes voice talents Will Ferrell (as the Man with the Yellow Hat), Drew Barrymore, and Dick Van Dyke, as well as all-original music from Jack Johnson.

In Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey, the fun-filled sequel to the hit animated movie, Curious George and the Man with the Yellow Hat set out on a madcap cross-country adventure to reunite Kayla, a homesick elephant, with her family. This unlikely trio faces all types of comic calamities and colorful characters and in the end learns that with family, friends and determination you can achieve anything. In A Very Monkey Christmas, Curious George and the Man with the Yellow Hat are having a wonderful time getting ready for Christmas. There’s only one dilemma – neither of them can figure out what to give the other for a present! In the end, both gift-giving predicaments are simply and beautifully resolved, revealing the true spirit of the holiday season.

Tips for Creating Family Traditions

PBS encourages families to take part in traditions new and old. PBS Parents provides additional ideas to create meaningful traditions for the family such as:

1) Write an annual letter to your child. The holidays are an appropriate time to mark your child’s growth with a special message that will be cherished for a lifetime. Seal letters and store them in a keepsake box until they are old enough to read and enjoy them.

2) Do a Secret Santa gift exchange for charity. Turn the tables this year. Instead of buying a present, make a donation or spend time volunteering for a charity of the giftee’s choice.

3) Make a family walk an annual event. Walking is a great way to spend time with each other, and work off those extra gingerbread cookies! Set aside time — even if it’s 30 minutes — to get outside and stretch your legs with the family.

4) Leave a legacy that lasts (and helps the environment). Each New Year’s Day, plant a tree in honor of your child(ren). Hold a special ceremony in which everyone in the family plays a part in planting that year’s tree, and take lots of pictures, both when the tree is planted and over the years as it grows.

5) Take part in a community service project as a family. Designate a day that will be devoted to serving others in your community.

6) Select a recipe and make it a tradition to make it together as a family, giving each family member a task in preparing it.  In honor of the CURIOUS GEORGE Holiday Spectacular, make monkey bread or a banana dessert.

My granddaughter ‘Lil Moomette celebrates her birthday in October and will be turning five.  There’s so many opportunities for a birthday party theme!  Several of the local farm stands offer hayrides, and birthday celebrations can be set up in the picnic areas.  She’ll be inviting her Kindergarten friends along with her pre-school brother, Slugger and his buddies!

How to Make a Halloween Wreath 

This is a fun and easy Halloween craft project for kids that you may want to break up across a couple of days, so be sure to start a few days before the big night. Mom, Dad, Grandmom and Grandpa can join in the fun as well and make a Halloween wreath of your own too!

Material List

•  Paper Plate (One per child/adult)
• Scissors
• Leaves
• Glue Sticks
• Orange Construction Papers
• White Construction Paper
• Black Construction Paper
• Washable Black Marker
• Black Yarn (optional)

Adult Preparation: (To Be Done Prior to Actual Wreath Making)

Cut the center from each paper plate prior to giving one to each child. These will be the base for the homemade wreaths.

Day 1: Grab the kids and head outdoors.

Gather as many fallen leaves of different shapes and colors as you can find. Once you’ve collected enough leaves to cover each paper plate, head back inside and glue them to the paper plates. You can glue the leaves to cover the entire plate, randomly around the plate or even as a border around only the edge, whichever you prefer. Once you’ve glued the leaves to the paper plate, leave the plates to dry for 24 hours or at least overnight.

Day 2: Creativity

Depending on how much time you have to complete this project you can have the children do the next step after the leaves have been glued on, while you’re waiting for them to dry or you can make another day of it.

Let the kids draw Halloween images on the construction paper that you can pick up at your local craft store.

Here are some ideas for each color of paper:

• Orange – Pumpkins (Use the black marker to draw the face on their pumpkins)
•  White – Ghosts, Mummies, Bones
•  Black – Cats, Witch Hats (You can use the yarn to put a tail on the cat and hair on the witches head if you’d like to put that under the hat)

Once the kids have picked out and drawn which decorations they’ll be using, carefully cut them out and paste them to the wreath.

Tip: Pre-placement (before gluing) will give the child an idea of what the wreath will look like once it is all glued together. When the kiddos are happy with the way the decorations are placed, it’s time to glue them to the leaves.

Again, allow the decorations to dry completely.

Day 3: Decorating Time

Congratulations! You’ve made your very own homemade simple and easy Halloween wreath. Enjoy your child’s creation by hanging it on the front door,  or his or her bedroom door for all your friends and family to see and admire.

‘Lil Moomette, my granddaughter will be entering Kindergarten this fall and has already gone on the practice-run for the school bus and met her teacher.  Slugger recently turned three and for the first time, won’t have his sister by his side in their pre-school daycare program.

When I was a teenager in 1969 I had visited the original Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in London, England.  Of course, the figures on display in London were quite different from the ones I saw in New York City this past summer.

On display are political leaders; historical figures; pop stars; cultural figures; TV stars; sports stars and world leaders.

Even if you can’t get to NYC, there are many other opportunities to visit the Madam Tussauds Museum with your family, as there are locations in Amsterdam, Bankok, Berlin, Blackpool; Hollywood, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, London, Shanghai, Washington, DC and Wien.

It was exciting to have the opportunity to visit and review the Madame Tussaud Wax Museum.  On a hot summer day, it was refreshing to spend several hours in a “cool” museum.  Our visit started with an elevator to the top floor of the museum, opening into a Hollywood Red Carpet atmosphere!

Janis Joplin

Janis’ music is unforgettable!  Such a tragedy she died so young at the age of 27.  I was mesmerized looking at this figure up close, as it was so detailed – Janis looked so old, way beyond her 27 years, because of the hard life that she lived.

Things You Didn’t Know

• Each strand of hair is inserted individually, taking approximately five weeks to complete each head.
• Two maintenance teams inspect and primp each figure daily before the attraction opens.
• To add authenticity to the figures at Madame Tussauds New York, many artifacts have been donated from the celebrity or purchased from auctions. Joan Rivers & Ivana Trump even donated their personal nail polish.
• All figures have their hair washed and make-up retouched regularly.
• From the first private sitting with a celebrity to completion, it takes approximately four months to create a figure.
• More than 250 precise measurements and photographs of a subject are taken to accurately create a wax figure. If the subject is unavailable for these measurements and photographs, Madame Tussauds studio artists study hundreds of photos and watch hours of video to create the figure.
• All celebrities’ vital statistics are kept confidential – despite repeated requests from the public and media.
• Because wax shrinks, wax figures are made two percent larger than the real life subjects they portray.
• Red silk thread is used to create the veins on each eyeball.
• Knotted rope is used to create the look of veins on the bodies.
•  Each figure costs approximately $125,000 to make.
•  More than 500 million people worldwide have visited a Madame Tussauds – that’s more than the population of North America and Australia combined.
