Jamie and The Angel:  Meeting Her Guardian Angel

First up is a body, mind and spirit childrens book by Carol Guy, “Jamie and The Angel:  Meeting Her Guardian Angel” (Marvelous Spirit Press).

Beautifully illustrated by Richa Kinra, Jamie and the Angel is about children who are gifted in the psychic area.  I’ve written here before that I, myself profess to have some sort of psychic ability, or Sixth Sense, if you prefer.  Although my “gift” didn’t develop until I was older, children are capable of such  intuitive insights also.

The busy holiday season is right around the corner and will be here before you know it! Are you organized or a procrastinator? I like to get a head start on making sure everything’s in order and crossed off my holiday list of things to.

Fairs In September

For the last several weekends in a row, my family has visited quite a few local fairs.  We’ve been to the Farm Day Festival, Haddam Neck Fair and The Big E in Massachusetts,  (Eastern States Exposition.)

Owned and operated by the Durham Agricultural Fair Association, Inc., the Durham Fair is the largest fair in North America managed entirely by unpaid volunteers.

My Hubby and I have been going to the Durham Fair since even before my own kids were born, and now it’s an annual event with the whole family, especially the grandchildren!

It was an extremely hot day today, especially humid for this time of year in Connecticut.  You would think it was Mud Season in Vermont because it had been raining for the last several days, and many of the fields that normally allow parking just ripe for muddin’ !

Despite the heat, we enjoyed the live entertainment, rides and games on the Carnival Midway.  There were first-class animal competitions and discovery events on the Corn Stalk Stage, along with my favorites, the crafts, exhibits, shopping and fun food. Yummy!  We always try to eat at civic organization booths, and ate at the Lions Club booth.  We sat under a tent for shade with plenty of picnic tables, and a live guitarist playing Folk Music.  The cheeseburgers were huge and tasty, along with the foot-long hotdogs, and fresh apple cider from Lyman Orchards.  We decided that next year, we’re going to try one of the chicken barbeque dinners that several of the church groups put on.

We walked through the permanent buildings housing the displays of award-winning baked goods, gingerbread houses, canned vegetables, jams and jellies.  There were also floral arrangements, and vintage agricultural antique farm machinery.

Slugger and his sister enjoyed climbing on the John Deere tractors!

If you choose to leave the fairgrounds early, you can return by getting your hand stamped as the live entertainment on the main stage for the weekend included KC and the Sunshine Band; Blues Traveler and Steel Magnolia.

The first fair in 1916 was held entirely on the Durham Town Green but now is spread over 45 adjacent acres of farmland, and there are many permanent structures.  What was once a local event now has turned into the largest of its kind in Connecticut.

For the kids who live in the Durham area, Opening Day is like a major holiday, and they get a half-day off from school!  The first fair drew about 2,000 people mainly from Durham and the surrounding towns but now, if the weather is good the fair may draw over 200,000 people from all over Connecticut and surrounding states.

The Durham Fair remains 100% volunteer run and a true agricultural fair, contributing academic scholarships and charitable donations totaling over $50,000 through the work of the Durham Fair Foundation.

Light therapy products are used to treat patients suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD. The common theory is that the absence of natural sunlight plays a role in how we feel. Since seasonal affective disorder occurs mainly in the fall and winter seasons, this seems to hold true.

Here in New England, we’ve certainly received our share of snow for the winter. It’s pretty to look at when it’s all clean and fresh.

When the flakes start flying, I usually cocoon inside, bake a loaf of Irish Soda bread, do cookies with Lil Moomette or some good old Yankee homemade soup ~ maybe get something going in the slow-cooker so the house will smell warm and inviting. Best not to be out on the roads when it’s a sleet or ice mixture going on too!

However, being inside, with the warm and fuzzy feeling only lasts so long until we start getting on eachother’s nerves.

This past weekend the Hubster and I had dinner with two couples who we used to boat with that we’ve known for years. The snowbird couples are leaving to spend the next several months in Florida.

Being out in the sun makes people happy. It’s not just because the weather gets warm because the temperature could be frigid with the sun beaming down. Therapy for Seasonal Affective Disorder may shed some light on the subject.

During the latter part of the year, the days are shorter which means fewer hours of light. With the change in seasons comes a change in the weather. Those shorter days are more cloud covered and colder than the former months. Nature goes into hibernation as everything appears to “die” so it can be reborn again in the spring.

Light Therapy Products

With light therapy, the conditions of the sun are mimicked in an attempt to alleviate depression. The therapy works to deliver a light that is as intense as the sunlight. To do that, the light therapy lamp (device used for light therapy) emit a beam of light with an intensity of 10,000 lux. This is the measure of the light intensity as compared to a normal light bulb.

A person utilizing this therapy will sit in close proximity to the light box for anywhere from fifteen minutes to two hours. The light hits the body particularly the face without staring directly at the light. Light therapy lamp  users reported better moods after only two weeks of the therapy.

There have been no definitive clinical trials conducted with light therapy to measure its effectiveness on seasonal affective disorder. People who utilize it have done so with the advice of medical personnel. Only they can determine if the situation will benefit from the use of a light therapy lamp.

The light box has been used by people suffering from clinical depression. It has indication that their symptoms may lessen with use. People with sleep rhythm problems have benefited from light boxes as well.

Light therapy has other indications besides seasonal affective disorder. It is a treatment for acne and other skin disorders. The artificial ultraviolet light of a light box destroys the bacteria that cause acne and other skin disorders.

The artificial ultraviolet rays don’t damage skin like normal sunlight. The rays are not as strong. For use with patients suffering from seasonal affective disorder, this was a concern of the process. Sitting in front of a light that emits ultraviolet radiation on a daily basis would help the depression at the cost of damaging the skin.  Seasonal Affective Disorder lamps that are  used for that treatment emit no ultraviolet radiation.

I’ll be adding a light therapy lamp to my Wish List as it’s about as close as I’m going to get to go on a winter vacation this year!

I often burn candles in order to create a relaxed atmosphere after a stressful day. Burning candles bring out a feeling of peace and harmony.

Recently I adopted a baby stray Calico kitten who now fights for shares space with my 13-year old house cat.  I work until the wee hours of the morning, and am so tired that I often forget to extinguish the candle I would have burning. To use the warmer, I broke the cube off of the packet and placed it in the warming dish.  There’s enough heat from the bulb to melt the wax.  The Gingersnap fragrance filled the whole downstairs of my house, and smells just like the real thing!

When the kids and grandkids come to visit, I have them fooled – they think I’ve been baking!  So sorry to disappoint …

It’s easy to change the fragrances, as you can either pour the melted wax back into it’s original packaging to reform, or you can let the wax solidify and then store in a cool place for later use.

Some of the new scents I can’t wait to try for fall are Baked Apple Pie, Cranberry Spice and  Autumn Sunset.  Magnificent!

During the Holiday Season, one of the best ways to express your love for your beloved ones is by giving gifts. Different gifts signify different things to different people. One of my best friends from the office took a golden handshake early retirement, an opportunity that was too good to pass up.  I still keep in contact with her – when I can can catch up with her.  Usually, along with her husband, she’s out and about and has become a Mystery Shopper.

Not only do mystery shopping jobs allow flexible scheduling and supplemental income but many find mystery shopping jobs a perfect complement to a retiree’s existing passion for shopping and dining out.

Have you ever heard of mystery shopping?  It’s a method that some people use to make money in their spare time, but many people mistake it for a scam.  In some cases, it is, but there are plenty of perfectly viable opportunities out there for WAHM’s that are legitimate.  The right opportunity with a well established company can provide the prospective shopper with several benefits in addition to welcome extra money for groceries.

So what do mystery shoppers do, and how do you go about discovering shopping opportunities that are legitimate?

Mystery shoppers are customers hired by a company to shop undercover, sometimes in a competitors’ store, oftentimes in their own franchises.  They shop everywhere, pose as customers, and gather intelligence about all sorts of areas – from quality of service to cleanliness.  Mystery shoppers act just like regular shoppers – they buy merchandise, make returns and ask questions, all while making a lot of observations.  After their shopping trip is over, the mystery shopper completes and submits a report.

This isn’t a way to get paid for what you think about the experience; it’s more like a form of journalism, and your report form will contain mostly yes or no questions.  Most mystery shoppers are actually hired by businesses to tell them about the experiences of customers in their own stores – things that a supervisor might not see.  After all, most people are on on their best behavior in front of the boss.  The information gathered by mystery shoppers can even be used to reward good employees.

There are all kinds of businesses that might use mystery shoppers – hotels, restaurants, spas, boutique shops, theme parks and banks.  There are even government agencies that send out people who do a similar job to that of mystery shoppers, to find out how citizens are treated.  Plenty of opportunities are available, and if you want to get involved, you’ll need to find a mystery shopping company.  Approximately 2.5 million people are currently working in this position.

Like any job opportunity, this kind of position has brought out some scammers, too.  Rookie mystery shoppers should be forewarned before they sign up with any randomly selected service.  Look for companies that belong to the Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA),  which have to agree to certain ethical standards and be formally approved.  Try to find out more about the company before you commit to a fee. Never pay any company to apply, or to get a “kit” of information that’ll supposedly help you get the job.  Legitimate jobs are available for free.

If you see promises of high pay rates, it’s probably not on the up-and-up.  Most mystery shoppers get paid around $10 per assignment although complex assignments can be in the $100 range.  While you’re not likely to get rich doing this job, it is a way to make a little extra money while having a lot of fun shopping.
