As many of you know, I’m dedicated to trying to retire from my day FT job to work from home full time and also to try to take care of the grandkiddos.

When my children were young, I used to have a part-time job where I would type at home for a law office. I worked about 30 hours per week at night after the kids went to bed. It brought in a nice supplemental income.

Since I recently received a layoff notice from my employer, I’m going to start implementing the tips and techniques that are in this how-to guide that I would like to share with you.

5 Simple Techniques to Work at Home Forever

If you’ve spent any time online, you will already know that there are lots of scams out there! You might have even begun to doubt that there are any work-at-home positions available for serious jobseekers. If this sounds like you, you aren’t alone!

Believe me, there are real home based jobs, but what most of the work at home sites omit in their information packages is that it takes work to get work. Finding a telecommuting job can be a full time job in itself, but if you don’t have all the facts, you will be spinning your wheels trying to get somewhere or you will probably give up within a few weeks. That would be a shame, because there aren’t enough high quality telecommuters as it is!

Look, I know you’re skeptical. So was I, a few short years ago. That was before I started implementing some very unique strategies that allowed me to generate so much work from my small home office, that I needed to hire extra staff just to keep up with it all!

The strategies I used are actually very simple, and you can duplicate these ideas to become a very successful telecommuter. In fact, I want you to copy my techniques, even if it means I create my own competition! Why? Because every time a new person starts to work from home more successfully and efficiently, that means one more employer is happy with the concept of hiring homeworkers! That means everyone gets more jobs, and more opportunities to do what we all love to do…working at home in our pyjamas!

So, let’s cover the top 5 simple techniques you can use to work at home forever, shall we?

1. Never pay for any job! There is never a good reason to pay for work, and I am amazed at how many jobseekers waste precious time and money chasing after schemes that will never pay. It wastes a lot of time you could better spend targeting your jobsearch to legitimate and valid work.

2. Get your materials ready! You are going to need to be ready before you start looking for work. You will need a specialized telecommuter’s resume, an excellent cover letter template, and an online portfolio that showcases samples of your work. Without these things in place ahead of time, you will not be ready for rapid response when an employer needs to see your stuff.

3. Make sure you have all the equipment and software you’re going to need! Depending on your skill set, you’re probably going to need special software and equipment to do your job right. Don’t expect an employer to pay for these things. A prospective employer is more likely to hire the next person who is properly equipped, rather than hire you if you expect the employer to pay for what you need to do your job.

4. Know what you do for a living! This is an absolute necessity if you want to work from home. You may think that you want to do “typing at home”, but if that’s all you can think of, then you’re wasting time. Think about how your typing skills will be useful to your employer, come up with creative applications of that skill, set up samples to show what your service looks like, and plan ahead on how much you will charge for that service. Be willing to tell prospective employers exactly what you do and how much you charge for it.

5. Change your strategy! Instead of looking for jobs that have already been posted online, and have already been taken, look for companies that are well suited for your talents. Create your own work by contacting companies that have not yet posted jobs online, and eliminate the competition. But, make sure you know exactly what service you plan to offer that company, and why it is useful to them. Don’t bother contacting companies by sending vague resumes. That technique never works! Contact targeted companies with specific services in mind, and let them know you are open to alternate suggestions.

These techniques work extremely well, and using them allowed me to build my home based service company from scratch, without spending a dime on advertising. I was broke when I started working from home, and I didn’t have a computer. Using these techniques, I was able to slowly build my business and develop a client base that has consistently earned me more money than if I was working onsite. You can do it too!

Stop to Smell the Roses

When I was a kid, my grandmom used to have a favorite saying:

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy…

Most women can be micro-managers or control freaks. That’s not always a bad thing, but when you run a business from home and manage your household, the stress of trying to micro-manage every little detail can be unbearable. Learn to take it easy and make an attempt to delegate household duties and chores.  Let all the family members pull their own weight in some form or manner.

Surely you realize that before you started your blog or home business, wasn’t there days when the dishes didn’t get done because you were tired?  Hopefully no one complained. What’s changed?

Now you have taken on new responsibilities with your business that demands your time. If you’re afraid that your house will turn into a disaster without your constant attention, don’t be. All you’re accomplishing is the fact that you’re increasing your anxiety level while decreasing your productivity in the home office. Who can concentrate when their mind is all over the place?

A plausible solution is to set daily goals. These goals encompass the business side and the family side. Setting goals helps maintain the balance between family and business. This will also help you be better able to relax.

Here are some goal-setting tips:

1. Know your limitations. There are no super moms – only normal moms who are super tired. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will your business be. Take it one step at a time. If you are working on marketing your business, use one strategy at a time and cultivate that. As you take on clients, spread out the work until you find your comfort zone and then you can add more projects. Allowing yourself the time to do good work and complete projects on time is a great feeling.

2. Alternate business days and housework days. There will always be housework to do. For one brief shining moment, your house is clean and then the family comes home. Choose a day when you work schedule is light or take one or two mornings a week and devote them to cleaning. Even on those days, set a time frame. Do what needs to be completed during that time and leave the rest for the next cleaning day. You’re shaking your head I can tell. Before you say to yourself, “she’s crazy” – give it a try. On the days when work is the priority, your mind will be focused on work and not the dishes.

3. Schedule in some free time. Spending time doing absolutely nothing or working on a hobby fulfills a soulful need. Work and home are more manageable when there is time for you factored into your week. It doesn’t have to be every day, but it needs to be there for your sanity. You’ll snap if you remain wound too tightly. Take time doing something YOU like to do on a regular basis.

Each day brings a new opportunity to grow your blog or business, enjoy your family and take time to smell the roses. A well balanced life increases overall well-being and productivity in all of your tasks, especially your blog or home business.

Lil’ Baby Cakes

Making the decision to leave corporate America after 21 years was one of the most difficult decisions in my life.  Along the way I had daily reminders that I was really not in control of my destiny.  Work pressures weighed on me heavily as I did conference calls late into the evening sitting in bed next to my husband.  I missed many of my kids activities at school as well.  Something had to change and after many weeks if not months of soul searching I started my search to find my next career.

I have always enjoyed making things as a little girl and have always had a knack for decorating and doing crafts.  My next steps were going to take me in that direction.  I made an offer on a business and began the transition after resigning from my corporate job in April 2007.  So far, so good.

Unfortunately, the deal fell through and low and behold I now had nothing!  Believe me I sat up at night questioning myself over and over again.  But with the support of my husband I hung in there and continued to search.  In September 2007 I found Lil’ Baby Cakes and knew I found my “baby“.  We closed in December 2007.

I felt relief and just a sense of calmness knowing I got off the corporate treadmill.  I had time to be with the kids, my husband, and friends.  I felt great about Lil’ Baby Cakes and my start as a small business owner began.  Being the creative type I truly love the opportunity to design new diaper cakes and work with my customers.  I operate the business with a small team of ladies out of a leased office space, as it’s not practical to run from a home.  I’ve spent a lot of time nurturing Lil’ Baby Cakes into a professional shopping experience for our customers including our website, blog, phone support, and naturally our diaper cakes.  I really strive to offer an upscale product that any new mom would be thrilled to receive.

I believe you can break the mold of working a corporate job that takes time away from family and the responsibilities of being a mom to follow one’s true passions. I can now participate in our kid’s activities, and can honestly say I am doing what I love.

My biggest lessons in my journey so far is that I wear many hats and my job is never done.  However, I have freedom to pick and choose how to spend my time.  It’s never a straight path to reach your goals.  I found that out very quickly!  I’m still reaching for the stars and encourage other moms reading this to pursue their dreams.  Don’t get discouraged by the setbacks as I believe they are inevitable.  Besides it makes the “wins” that much sweeter.

Meet My Friend, Maricris

Awhile back on a WAHM forum that’s now gone by the wayside, I met Vicki, who wrote a blog, “Simply Vicki.” We became friends, but due to personal circumstances, Vicki terminated her blog, along with her Internet access.

Recession-Proof your Small Biz

If you have a business especially if it’s small, and you’re grumbling, whining and reeling due to the effect of the unstable economy, Be still { wish I can do just that but,} you’re not alone! Like numerous small biz owners across the globe, like you and me, future seem rather hazy. To me, Bleak is an an overrated description because in spite of the dwindling economy, I still see hope… If you know where to look!

Golden Flower Creations was established middle of Last year with a notable hope of making a profit out my creations. I create unique pieces of Jewelry with contemporary and varying styles but more so, a fusion of Asian designs as part of my tribute to my Asian Heritage. I’m also considered the wreath lady. I was initially popular with my high-quality, unique wreaths which is competitively priced in comparison to Michael’s or Garden Ridge. People loved it! The demand was there. It was enough to fuel the reason to turn it into a profitable business. Though the profitable side is still a work in progress, it surely has brought some useful money in. Not even a year old yet, GFC has already proven it’s worth.

But just like a baby, it needs a lot of nurturing, a lot of caring and a lot of sacrifices {like losing sleep} and team work to make it a success! The downside of being small in this current economy proves daunting. There was a point wherein I was afraid of spending money to even stock up on my inventory. It was a battle between, saving the money for “rainy days” ahead or stocking up on materials for my online store which has no guarantee will sell. There was a time wherein the world seemed to have stood still. There was a long pause in sales. People were afraid to spend their money which in turn results in NO SALES. Items in my online store were either collecting dust or flies were just hovering around it like spoiled food. It was a dilemma!

Surely like life, owning a business is a gamble. You lose some, you win some. I chose to win some but with great caution on how I use my lucky cards especially nowadays. I only spend on items when I REALLY NEED THEM or is guarantee it will sell or will help my business.

Here are some of my Business Survival 101 that cost nothing to do but some legwork:

1- Blog : If you don’t have one, create one! Blogging is one of the best tools to get the word out about your work and what you do. It is so powerful, most big companies now, blogs!

2- Twitter: 140 Characters can go a long way in free adverstising. Come follow me @maricrisg
3- Facebook: Create a biz page and get more people to find your business.
4- Craft Shows: Small or big, they are the best money generating income for any products you sell. Face to Face marketing always works better than online.

5- Recession-price your items: Selling your creations below it’s material worth is not the key here but selling it affordable enough {without devaluing the worth of your time creating it, is the trick}. Entice buyers with the impulse-buy phenomena!

There is no instant solutions to success but with patience and diligence, we’ll reach our goals no matter how long it takes. And For as long as we put our minds into it. Best of luck to all small business owners like Cindi and me. Let’s all strive for success!

Cross Blog conversation is … a conversation between two people that takes place on their respective blogs.

The conversation starts when one side posts a letter to the other and finishes up by asking the other side a question. The other participant answers the question on their blog and adds on a new question for the other and so it goes – back and forth.

Readers will want to keep an eye on both blogs to catch the responses and new questions – and, since the conversation is being carried out in public, they can comment and share their own perspectives about the questions and answers.

Christie is a mama to be and is expecting her new addition thanks to a gestational surrogate, who, as she says has “our bun in her oven.” Christie was a makeup artist in her former life and has been working on the Internet for 2 years now. She loves all things WAHM as well as podcasts and her enthusiasm as a Work at Home Moms Talk Radio intern really shines through in her emails as well as writing skills.

Well, this Baby Boomer WAHM Grandma is excited to think that someone would be interested in my opinions!  I think I’ll send this post via e-mail to my 2 grown daughters ~ you know how it goes, they sometimes “turn a deaf ear” on you?

In her first cross blog conversation with me, Christie stated that she feels it’s best to do things you are passionate about and wanted to know why I am passionate about being a work-at-home mom.  As I state in my About Me blog page here on Moomette’s Magnificents, I’ve been around the block for awhile and am more than willing to share my opinions! (I like how Christie says I ‘take no prisoners’))

What Am I Passionate About as a WAHM?

You could consider me a wannabe Librarian.  As a Paralegal by profession, I was trained in writing skills, fact-checking and Internet Research.  I’m extremely detail oriented.  At one point in my life it was my hope to pursue a Masters Degree in Library Science, however time constraints and family obligations wouldn’t allow it.

When I was a child there was a bookcase outside my bedroom door.  On rainy days I could often be found thumbing through the entire set of Encyclopedia Britannica.  When my daughters hear me tell that story, they think I’m a nerd.  They’re right.  I’ve gone from being a bookworm to a geek and news junkie now.  If you want to know where mom is, check the computer room!  You might think I’m an extrovert, but I’m not, really.  I like to think of myself as more the ‘Wizard of Oz’ behind the curtain (in this case, a computer!)

I’m passionate about sharing knowledge with others that I have developed over my 50-Something plus years.

My grandmother lived to be 101 and passed on a tremendous amount of knowledge and oral history to me.  In this modern age, oral history may translate to “blogging.”

When I was a young mom opportunities were limited to work at home as the Internet hadn’t been invented.  Because of my skills as a paralegal I worked 3 days per week in a law office.  I was fortunate to have an understanding supervisor and was able to take work home.  I typed up writs and complaints on a “state-of-the-art” electric Royal typewriter, often working from 8 pm after the kids were in bed, until well after 1 am.  The work-at-home opportunity enabled me to piece together a 40-hour paycheck. I was the uber WAHM in the 1980s.

Much like you, my children were born later on in my marriage.  I married in 1974, but my first child wasn’t born until 9 years later, in 1983.  I’m passionate about the “what if” factor of being self-supportive.

Life gets in the way and even with the most thought-out plans you’ll find yourself off-ramping.  Children did come along.  That’s why, while in my 40s, I went back to finish the college education I started after graduating high school.  Completing my college degree was also “insurance” that if something happened to my husband, I would be able to compete with any “20-somethings” as I had not only a work ethic, but experience and paper trail to compete in any job market.  I’m a firm believer of having a “Plan B” in place, sort of like a back-up for the back-up babysitter.

By completing my college education while my children were pre-teens, I felt it showed them that I was serious about their education. My oldest daughter graduated college as a Communications major, and after an extended maternity leave, recently landed a position as a Marketing Director, despite the job-market today.

I feel fortunate that I instilled in my daughters a drive and determination to succeed, which I hope to pass on to other young women who may not have a close support system in place.

My husband is also self-employed, but didn’t open his own business until my daughters were in middle-school and high school.   We recognize the benefits and drawbacks of working from home and being self-employed.  We found that the girls actually benefited from someone being at home when they got out of school during the middle-school years!

My questions to Christie

Do you have a personal growth timeline set up?  Where do you see yourself, career wise in 5 years?  10 years?  Do you have a Plan B in place if your work-at-home dreams don’t come to fruition?  Do you expect or foresee yourself taking any steps, formal education-wise to effect any changes if your current plans fall through?

Finally, to answer your bonus question ~ What does “Moomettesgram” mean?

My oldest grandchild who is 2-1/2 goes by the nickname
“Lil Moomette.”  Therefore, I am Moomettesgram!
