Amplify The Web Social Networking and Sharing

Clipping Service

While Amplify’s goal is to make conversations on the web more enjoyable, I am using it as a news clipping service to share with my Twitter and Facebook followers posts that I find beneficial.  Amplify’s bookmark chicklet also enables me to use the clippings as a reference library of posts that I can refer back to and find helpful as a blogger.

While Twitter typically allows only 140 characters for posting an update, Amplify allows more than that.

Key features of Amplify are:

• Amplify is a free service to use

• Use Amplify to autopost to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Google Buzz, Tumblr, Posterous, WordPress and more. I use Tumbler to aggregate all of my media and press coverage.

• Amplify can be used in any web browser or get the Amplify Firefox add-on or Google Chrome extension.

• Amplify can be used to share directly to or from Google Reader

There isn’t an Amplify application for the Android or iPhone smartphones or an app for the Apple
iPad at the moment but they are expected to be available shortly.

Sign up for Amplify by using your Facebook or Twitter account, and start your own clipping service of your favorite news or blog posts.

Traffic Generation

Awhile back as part of my blogging tips and techniques series, I wrote a post on the benefits of adding Comment Luv to your blog.  Not only does it benefit you as a blogger for traffic generation when you leave comments on your friends’ blogs, Comment Luv will help to build relationships with new readers to discover bloggers who write about interests similar to their own interest. Or, perhaps, to discover new topics that they’d like to pursue further!

But there’s another benefit when you sign up for Comment Luv!  You now have the ability to make sure your favorite posts don’t fall off the timeline or radar screen.  You can purchase “credits” to ascertain that your favorite posts will always be available to leave as a link.

Comment Luv Default Links

You can purchase a default link to add to the list of returned posts that are sent back when you comment on a CommentLuv enabled site. It works out to one link = $4 USD. They are useful if you want to keep a particular post or page from your site available all the time when you comment.

You can use this page to add extra links using your own anchor text to the returned list of posts to choose from when you comment on CommentLuv enabled blogs. Ideal for keeping a favourite post or product page available on your last blog posts list.

You can only choose links that point to your existing registered URL’s (you can add more URLs at the additional URLs page)

One Default Link = 4 Credits, which you can purchase directly through Paypal.

NoFollow Reciprocity Plugin

Blogging Tips and Techniques

I first came across this plug-in on The Sits Girls site.  Every day I read and comment on their daily posts, and sometimes don’t get a chance to be the first one to comment.  Normally I’m at the end – and it’s at the end of their blog pages where I saw the “Improve the web with Nofollow -Reciprocity” and followed the link.   Interesting, thought I.  If they have it on their site, it must be good, because after all, they host Bloggy Bootcamp around the country.

After reading through the information, I said to myself, that as a blogger who’s readership comes close, but doesn’t yet surpass Dooce, The Bloggess or The Pioneer Woman, this is a no-brainer.

What the NoFollow Reciprocity wp plugin is attempting to do is:

The purpose of Nofollow-Reciprocity is to ‘redistribute’ PageRank to small site owners. This plugin detects links to above mentioned sites, and puts ‘nofollow’ tags on them. ‘Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.’  WordPress is a major blogging platform, with tens of millions of users. If many people using WordPress use this plugin, other big sites may reconsider their ‘nofollow’ strategy.

I installed it on this blog, along with my other two blogs – Frugal New England Kitchen and Great Finds and Giveaways.

For example, many of us have the Facebook “Like” button on our site.  We give Facebook  link juice by not having the no-follow on that little blue button.  But Facebook  gives us squat link juice back.

The same holds true for Tweetmeme, Tweet This, Twitter and many social networking and Ning sites that we belong to where we have our profiles listed.   In each, we don’t receive any link juice back.

This plugin will eliminate that, by automatically inserting the NoFolow code to those little buttons.

The NoFollow-Reciprocity plugin will also insert NoFollow code into the social icons at the buttons at the bottom of this post, such as SexyBookmarks (Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, etc).

Also, should you link to an article in Wikipedia – and don’t put in a NoFollow code – the plugin will automatically insert a NoFollow Code in there.

Although  I already use the wp SEO Platinum plugin and can automatically insert NoFollow on certain outgoing links should I choose,  it doesn’t take care of those little social icon buttons that we have no control over.

So, essentially, it’s redistributing some of that link juice our way, or at least to the smaller bloggers.

Part 1 – Setting Up Your Facebook Profile Page

After reading this line, you must be thinking – Is she crazy?  Everyone does!

Well, that’s not exactly true.  Whether you’re in your 20′s, 30′s or 40′s, some people prefer to be on MySpace, Twitter, or FriendFeed.

My peers (baby boomers and grandparents)  are just starting to set up Facebook accounts out of necessity and finding that because of the transient nature of our society, it’s a great way to keep in touch with kids who’ve moved to take jobs out of state.  My charming son-in-law’s mom just recently set up an account (or I should say, her daughter set one up for her.)  My best IRL friend in New Hampshire recently set up a Facebook account, and keeps in touch with her daughter who’s in Georgia.

I mentioned to her that as a mompreneur,  setting up a Facebook account for her used bookstore is a magnificent way for her to promote her business.

Back in 2008, I wrote this post explaining why I believe it’s important for WAHMs to have a Facebook Account.

Awhile back when I first started I opened a Facebook account for public relation purposes to promote my eBay store, blogs, virtual assistant business as well as Shoppes.  I’d heard that it was advantageous to use for PR and social networking purposes.

Now more than ever before, internet marketing is about building a community.  Whether you offer a forum on your website or you participate in social networking sites, social networking is a valuable traffic generating tactic.  Sites like Facebook and Twitter can be powerful tools for generating links and traffic to your site – create a profile and then post comments, links to your site and ideas which generate conversation.

At the time, I learned through trial and error how to establish and set up my Profile, and I’ve been continually adding and tweaking it, as well as setting up Fan Pages (now called “Like” Pages) for my various blogs.

In this series, I’m going to take you through the process of setting up your Facebook account covering the following topics:  How To Set Up Your Profile;  Adding and Organizing Friends; Profiles and Privacy; Using Your Wall and also offer some Facebook Tips.

Let’s get started!

To set up your Facebook account you will need:

*To have previously created an account at facebook.com
*Information and a photo for your profile

Step 1: Navigate to the Profile Area

Two things to keep in mind when setting up your profile…
1. Your profile is a representation of you – your interests, hobbies, school & work details, etc. This is where people learn more about you so make a good first impression.
2. Even with privacy settings set, there is always a chance that someone may see your posts. Be careful what you choose to publish.
To edit your profile go to your home page. Click “Edit My Profile” in the top left corner. You’ll be taken to the Basic information page where you can tell more about yourself.

When finished, click “Save Changes.”

Step 2: Add Profile Picture

Perhaps, one of the most important things to include in your online website is your picture. While a personal picture is optional, it is ideal. Many internet users enjoy taking to someone that they can see in their minds, without a picture this is difficult.

Be mindful that your profile picture represents you and is viewed by others, so use caution when choosing your photo. Don’t post something you wouldn’t want your Gram, Grampa, the kids or boss to see.

Below the Basic Information bar, on the left, you click “Profile Picture” upload or change your profile photo. Click “Browse” & select the photo on your computer that you want to show in your profile. It will add your photo immediately. You can change your photo any time.

Step 3: Edit Privacy Settings

In the top blue bar, click the account button to show the drop-down choices and click on privacy settings. This allows you to choose who can see the various sections of your Facebook account.

Some information such as your name, profile picture, location, gender, networks, pages and friends lists are always available to everyone; however, there are many sections you can control. Here are two such areas.

Basic Directory Privacy

In addition to your photograph, you may want to include your name.  Now, when it comes to your name, you need to be cautious.  You’re advised against giving your full name, especially if your profile or profile page contains a personal photograph of you.  In addition to your name, you may want to put down your location.  As with your name it’s important to err on the side of caution.  Your picture, your address, and your full name can be dangerous, especially if it falls into the wrong hands.

As much as you’d like to fill your social networking profiles with personal information, you’re advised to think about your safety before anything else.

Click “View setting.” to adjust the basic information privacy.

Read about each feature listed. Click the drop-down box on the right to choose who you would like to be able to see or use each item. Select the appropriate group.

Facebook Directory Privacy

If you have a mixed group of business, family, and friends, customizing who can see and comment on things you share would probably be a good idea. After all, you probably don’t want everyone, including potential customers, to know your quirks. Some things are just TMI and should be on a needs-to-know basis. Being able to customize your sharing settings comes in handy.

On the main privacy settings page, click on the customize link at the bottom.

Here you’ll find a rather long list of things that you can adjust to meet your privacy needs, including things you share, things others share, and contact information. Simply use the drop-down button to make your choices. In most cases it’s best to be a little cautious than to just let everyone see everything. Think carefully about your choices.

A few settings you should consider using:
1. Friends Lists: We’ll talk more about this in another how-to but this is where you can create private groups of friends that have certain privacy settings.
2. Search Settings: Some Facebook users prefer not to be found when others do a search. For example, teachers may not want to be found by their students. If you prefer not to show in the searches, you would want to adjust these settings to remain private.
3. Contact Info: To avoid spam and giving your contact information to everyone, consider setting your contact details to private.

Each day news sites such as CNN, or MSNB, along with local and national print newspapers are featuring articles regarding unemployment figures in the USA.

You or a family member might even be out of work yourself.  We all know people who are unemployed or underemployed. Unless you already know absolutely what field you’d like to work in, do some research on the alternative career choices.

Start a list of potential career choices.  Explore the possibility of turning your hobby into a career.  Are you a wine connoisseur?  Recently I did a post about how I’m a new aficionado of Ice Wine that my brother helped me to discover.  You might look into wine jobs. Then thoroughly investigate each one and find out what the job tasks are and what training and/or skills are necessary.  You should be able to narrow your list down the more information you discover.

Searching for a new job is becoming a common occurrence these days what with all the layoffs from companies downsizing or going out of business.

However,  searching for a job doesn’t need to be as painful as you might envision it, and there are definitely things you can do to make it go smoother.  Here are some job searching tips:

Treat job hunting like a full time job.

Work on your search every day, just as you would a job.  Looking for a job is a full time job. If you need to, get dressed in work attire, sit down in your home office, and get to work making phone calls, searching online, networking, sending out your resume and cover letter, etc.

Don’t wait to find a job.

Even if you’ve been given a nice severance package, don’t procrastinate.  You don’t know how long it’ll take to find a job and you don’t want to run out of benefits before you nail a new position.  If you have experience in the beverage jobs field as a barista, research transferring those marketing talents into the coffee jobs field.

You might find that you need to take some courses at a local community college to get yourself up to speed in your industry, and the sooner you find this out in your job search, the better off you’ll be.

Create an e-resume.

If you make a master e-resume, then you can personalize and change it to match different job positions that you’re applying for. It’s easier to do if you can work off a master copy rather than recreate a new resume each time. Likewise, you can do the same for your cover letter.

Educate yourself.

Learn as much as you can about the company you’re applying to so you can showcase your knowledge and gear your resume and interview answers around the company’s mission statement, business direction,  and  philosophies.

Get online and offline help.

Don’t be afraid to use all the resources available to you such as resume posting services, headhunters, job search emails, job boards, career counselors, State Department of Labor, etc.

Have your reference info handy.

Have a paper with all pertinent facts – names of at least 3 references; the companies they’re employed by; their business titles; plus email addresses and phone numbers.  When you’re going through the interview process, give your references a heads-up that they may be contacted shortly.  That way they don’t get a phone call out of the blue and they’ll be prepared to speak to your strengths.

Research and target your market.

Find out where the jobs are in your market.  Is it a growing field with new opportunities that might interest you?  Is one company merging with another? Is the current CEO retiring?  Do your research and keep abreast of current events and go after the position you want.

Spread your net.

Tell everyone from friends, neighbors, past co-workers, to fellow church and organization members that you’re looking.  Use social media like LinkedIn to list your credentials and resume.  Network with LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.  Many people have found jobs via Twitter by simply tweeting what their area of expertise is and asking people to “retweet” their message.

Have a plan.

Start a spreadsheet to record what you’ve done and where you are with your searching.  That way you wont’ duplicate your efforts and you’ll  have a clear idea of what to do next.  Being proactive will help you from becoming too discouraged.

Searching for a new job after you’ve been let go sometimes feels like the end of the world, but there are ways you can speed up the process and become successful at finding the job you want.

Social Networking

There’s been quite a bit of discussion lately with the new tv shows that are out, and the gossip magazines talking about “cougars” and younger men, older women. Whoever said that finding love and dating whether you’re in your 30’s,mid-life or a Baby Boomer is unheard of? I have two sister-in-laws who became widows at an early age.  One remarried within 3 years, and the second sister-in-law is now in a relationship.

Looking for love and companionship isn’t something that goes away simply because you aren’t a spring chicken any longer. Whether it’s getting back on track to finding a new, passionate relationship, or simply wanting some companionship, there’s no reason for you to shy away from the idea of dating again. Despite this, getting back into the dating scene at an older age may initially feel quite awkward.
