Tonight was the opening night for the Disney On Ice show at the XL Center in Hartford, CT and it truly was a magical journey and opportunity to introduce children to the thrill of live entertainment!

Ohana

I had the good fortune to attend the show with my oldest daughter, now 28; my charming son-in-law and my two grandchildren; Slugger who just turned two and ‘Lil Moomette, age four.

In the Lilo and Stich act, we learned that Ohana is the Hawaiian word for “family.” With family, nobody’s left behind.

What made it so magical for me, was that I felt as if I was being transported back in time – in my mind’s eye I was a young mom and my daughter was experiencing the land of make believe for the very first time. I delighted in the fact that now as a grandmom, I was able to see the glee on the faces of my grandchildren as they watched endearing Disney characters come to life before their very eyes!

The XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut was the perfect venue for this kid-friendly performance. Our seats were slightly to the left of center stage, and provided excellent viewing. Inasmuch as this is family entertainment and there is a nosebleed section at the XL Center, those sections were empty (I would like to believe by choice for safety reasons.)

Prior to the commencement of the event, an announcement was made that there would be theatrical smoke, however it was safe and not hazardous to anyone’s health. There were also to be some pyrotechnics for effect. The audience was encouraged to take photographs to preserve family memories.

The average age group of the child attendees ranged from approximately 3 to 8 years of age. The performance lasted 2 hours, with about a 20 minute intermission.

Costumes were colorful and the action was non-stop! Familiar stories of The Lion King; The Little Mermaid and Peter Pan engaged the children as they sat wide-eyed with rapt attention. I didn’t hear any crying babies or see any fidgety kids! This past Halloween my granddaughter wore a Tinker Bell costume, and delighted in seeing Peter Pan fly through the air and Tinker Bell swirl and skate around the ice with her magic wand showering magical green fairy dust across the auditorium stage.

As a mom, my heart skipped a beat as I listened to my 28 year old daughter sing along to songs from The Little Mermaid (Under The Sea) and The Lion King (Can You Feel the Love Tonight) – as if she had memorized all the words to each. After so many years, she still knew the name of each character!

I could almost hear her repeating a mantra of Peter Pan’s words “I don’t want to grow up….”

Many year past, the U.S. Figure Skating National Championships arrived to the Hartford Civic Center (now the XL Center) in 1977. The kids hadn’t been born yet, and my husband and I were there to take in all the renowned skaters! Ice skating is not only a superb form of exercise, it’s also a magnificent way to enjoy prime family time together.

Our family just got back from a magnificent long weekend at a New England camping place at Pawtuckaway State Park in New Hampshire.

Summer Celebrations

It was somewhat of a culture shock to me (a city mouse) as I’m used to traditional camping locations, and the NH campground and lake was almost 3 miles into the woods, off the main road!

While there, we held a family reunion with charming son-in-law’s family from Vermont.

There weren’t any lions, tigers or bears, (Oh My!) but I did see a water moccasin snake, and a huge mother-spider on my car!

I really can’t wait to go back again next year!

Moving right along in my Retro Series, the 90s and beyond were busy times for us here in Dysfunction Junction.

The economy (to us) was pretty good, and we were heavily involved in all the usual sorts of parenting activities involving the kiddos – in other words, we didn’t have a life.

To add to the adventure, the Hubster started his own business, and we celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary in 1999.

We’ve celebrated some milestones, had some fun, gained a little weight, pulled out our hair, and obviously dyed it several different colors over the years!

I’ve had a lot of fun this week showing my readers who’s behind the computer screen in this Retro Series , sharing tidbits of wisdom, or hot-flashing, ranting, raving at times!

Cape Cod Rail Trail Massachusetts – New England Photo Journal

When the kids were little we would camp up in Eastham, Cape Cod. The Cape is one of my most favorite places in New England. Every family vacation trip that we take reminds me of “Summer of ’42″ when life was simple, and more laid back. Biking the Cape Cod Rail trail sets me back in time. At least that’s the mindset I’m in when I’m up there. But that’s the subject of a whole ‘nother post.

We camped in a private campground that backs right up to the Rail Trail. The Cape Cod Rail Trail runs from Wellfleet to Eastham (probably beyond.) The girls would roller-blade, and the Hubster and I would bike. The vistas and views were beyond gorgeous – salt marshes, ponds, cranberry bogs, wildlife and nature.

Well, baseball spring training season is over and let the games begin!

My favorite former supervisor retired about 5 years ago. When we shared office cubicle space together we got along like cats and dogs. We even got “divorced” towards the end, and I moved to my own separate cubicle.

But you know how they say “absence makes the heart grow fonder?” We still keep in contact. It goes something like this. He’s a former military man, (Retired) as well as a huge sports fan of the Yankees baseball. When spring training begins in Florida each season, he and his wife of over 50 years become snowbirds and head south, settling in at one of those military hotels. He has season tickets to all the spring training games.

I get emails with pictures of him and his wife at the pool. I get pictures of him and his wife at the games. Sometimes I get phone calls.

The Sargent has his own “man room,” or family room “headquarters” set up in his condo all set and ready to go when he gets back from Florida.
