I must follow you

….Ricky Nelson/Little Peggy March

I used to have a Green banner in the right-hand corner of my blog. It said that I’ve become NoFollow Free!

Recently I’ve been doing quite a bit of research regarding the NoFollow/DoFollow attributes regarding comments and links pertaining to Word-Press.  As a WAHM, I’m always looking for a way to build a better widget and gain traffic to my blog. :-)

Today I installed the Word Press plug-in called NoFollowFree

Since I upgraded and have the automatic plug-in installer, it was super easy.

As I belong to When I belonged to Entrecard, I’d been introduced to many wonderful, informative blogs.  Here’s a post by Inside My Head that summarizes the No-Follow/Do-Follow concept in an easy-to-understand manner.

Most blog platforms have a built in default for the ‘NoFollow’ code. Wherever there is a link in a comment, search engines will not follow the link as they are crawling the internet, thus not providing backlinks and trackbacks. Its intended purpose was to help stop comment spam, but it doesn’t work. What it does do is remove some of the incentive for readers to contribute to your site by commenting on your posts.

What’s equally great, is that Leigh has listed all the blogs that now have removed the NoFollow feature.

Like Leigh, I have imposed some restrictions before the NoFollow provision is removed.  However, what’s great is that the more you comment on these DoFollow blogs, once you hit the required minimum posts, the restriction is removed, and you will benefit by having more backlinks to your blogs!

To learn how to remove NoFollow tags from Blogger blogs, there’s an informative Squidoo lens HERE.

I’m hoping that since I’ve also installed  CommentLuv and changed these attributes on my blogs, that I’ll see my statistics increase.

Your thoughts?  Do you prefer No Follow or Do Follow?  And Why?

I did not know about the widget but will use it from now on. I also have WordPress. I do notice that the sites that allow a trackback to my comments, motivate me to comment on them more frequently.

Thanks for the info. I’m going to add the plugin now.

I don’t understand. If you remove the no follow feature does that give you more traffic or less? Blogger hosts my blog so I’ll have to check out the squidoo lense that you recommended.

I am, as you know, just beginning to figure all this stuff out. That is by far the most understandable of the many posts I have read on no follow. I’ll be installing that plug in and changing mine, forthwith.

    Leigh says:

    @ Cascia
Removing the No Follow attribute on a link tells the search engines that you ‘approve’ of the links, and therefore they should be indexed. Having links to your site that the search engines CAN index, works in your favor by helping to improve the number of incoming links that point to your site. So people are always looking for “Do Follow” blogs to comment on, and thus build incoming links.

Becoming a “Do Follow” blogger improved my traffic greatly, with not more than a reasonable amount of spam, which was reduced by only following a commenter after he or she had left a reasonable amount of comments, such as 2 or 3.

    Hope that answers your question!

    Thanks for mentioning me Moomette!

I do believe dofollow can let more people comments, but now a lot of bloggers join this dofollow system but their comments section just nofollow. Unethical bloggers just wanna make traffics from people commenting only, this make visitors to go away after they know about it.

I am finding this topic very interesting.

i am a no follow girl as i feel it makes our blog ‘leaky’ and the pagerank is harder to increase with do follow and comment luv.

i am also very suspicious of comment luv.
I was planning to do a post on ‘list of mom blogs with comment luv’.I check my backlinks on yahoo webmaster every other day after commenting on these blogs and unfortunately some mommy blogs who claim to have comment luv and top commenter widget do not show up.

I find this whole thing shady and feel very few are legitimately giving link juice to others.

Shraddha – There’s nothing shady or suspicious. There are settings that can be implemented, once someone has left comments on a blog more than perhaps 5 times, the attribute can change automatically to “do follow.” If someone only leaves a comment once, then the attribute stays as “no follow.” Comment Luv always shows up for me whenever I visit a blog that has it implemented, and it shows up on my blog here.

This is great!! It’s going to take some time to figure out (I’m a little slow at this stuff sometimes) but its definitely worth spending more time on this.

At first glance I think I’d be a Do Follow kind-of girl :-)

Thanks very much. A lot of us non corporate bloggers don’t have the cash to spend buying links from big sites so one of the only way we can build backlink authority is through commenting.

    So thank you,

I read recently that removing nofollow on comment links is actually beneficial for blog owners these days because Google now uses the amount of activity your site generates in order to determine where it ranks in the search engines. Seems like removing the nofollow attribute would increase activity and really help blog owners out! Thanks for being dofollow!
